Cannes is a big deal. Whether we like it or not, it's the biggest award ceremony for the creative industry across all disciplines. To be awarded at Cannes can change a career and supercharge an agency. It's not the be-all and end-all - as the sage James Gordon-MacIntosh commented, picking up a sweep at UK industry awards can have a far greater impact. Winners see it as 'The gold standard. The omega.' to quote Greg Double (always a dangerous game). Having not attended this year, looking on with green eyes, it's been great to see so much positivity come from the ceremony. It's needed. As the brilliant Gideon Spanier wrote in his article for The Times 'If Cannes is a barometer of the industry, then things are changing and creativity is making a comeback.' And looking at the work that was awarded, I feel a huge amount of positivity. CANNES WINNERS AND MEMORABILITY We’re still all reeling under Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity celebrations and the winners this year This year India won 25 awards and each one very deserving. While they won from a distinguished jury for their #creative aporoach, innovation, effectiveness and more the thing to perhaps note with the awards these days is that while they’re done for some incredibly fabulous work, after a year or two they will perhaps not have much memorability unless you’re from the #advertising or #media industry Consumers attention spans are shorter now, with the multiple channels and mediums it’s almost impossible for them to have memory of the ads that stay with them. It’s almost like music of today that has a short shelf life and you won’t perhaps easily remember most of the same songs 4-5 years from now no matter how good they are now And yet cut to say 25 years ago and this for us Indians was our first award at Cannes. The idea was simple and the execution phenomenal and this advertisement is one that stays with consumers : One Black Coffee is what millions of us know the advertising for and we’d have our own share of emotions seeing this one It’s strange that these #brands may perhaps not be available today too but in a time while it was created it had such a lasting impact, with the fewer avenues of playing our this communication and not in the days of YouTube and #socialmedia it still created impact on millions So what is it that creates this lifetime memory and I’d like to ask some of the best in our advertising and media industry and created some of the most memorable brands Pops KV sridhar Kiran Khalap Rishad Tobaccowala Shiv Shivakumar Sonal Dabral and each of these five gems have given us some amazing work in the last 25 years Happy to hear views from others too while I’m sure these stalwarts will have their own perspectives

I was looking over the Ad Age Agency A-List awards and noticed something interesting: the majority are independents. In fact, the vast majority of the 10 A-List agencies are independent. The majority of the "Agency Standouts" are also independent. This isn't to say that there isn't good working going on in the Holdcos... but wow, the independents are just crushing it! I think there are a lot of reasons for this: 1. It's been a rough couple of years in the Holdcos 2. In a market where there are fewer large AOR assignments up for grabs, the independents are still bringing passion and enthusiasm to the pitches we run 3. Independents can take risks, go after smaller opportunities, and are living by their wits daily 4. The Holdcos cut a ton of senior talent in the past few years, and there has been a certain "revenge of the ex staffers" playing out as some of these awarded agencies were founded by ex Holdco leaders or received healthy talent infusions from the Holdco castoffs 5. The Holdcos seem distracted by more mergers and agency selloffs 6. The seemingly endless amount of Holdco leadership reorganizations has become a drinking game Back to the indies being in the spotlight: this is so good for our industry!!! Now, don't write the Holdcos off. They have immense talent that will shine if the leash is loosened a bit. I, for one, am looking forward to that. Clients will win with more competition. Can Cannes Lions play a role in leading #sustainable change? Next week, the world's biggest #advertising festival kicks off among the glitz, yachts and champagne-filled glasses at the #French Riviera. The contradiction to sustainability couldn't be bigger and you don't have to be part of Extinction Rebellion to feel at odds with the unhinged commercial circus. Talking sustainability at an advertising festival can seem like pitching peace at a weapon's conference. Yet, Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is de facto a global meeting place and the coveted Cannes Lions awards are for many in the industry highly aspirational and a #career highlight. In that way Cannes Lions has a responsibility and a potential to drive change. I'll be joining a few events during my week there. On Monday, I'll join International Advertising Association (IAA) and help launch a new Sustainable Brand Index that can serve as a global compass for our industry to get the balance right between saying and doing.
