Based on 2022 CDC data, 1 out of 3 Americans report sleep insufficiency. Quality sleep is fundamental to our mental and physical well being and influences all our relationships, personal and professional. Arguably it’s one of the most important measurable indicators we have in any category. Yet, the body of data we have to assess national sleep trends is so laughably bad, based on annual self-reports by only a small sample of people. For measuring economic heslth, we don’t annually surveil CEOs with questions like “did your company do well last year?” Instead, as we should, we collect and analyze a diverse ecosystem of data, objective and subjective, leading and lagging, macro and micro, public and private. So where do we get this data for sleep? Well, wearables and other health monitors are one potential source. Not only can they help monitor our own individual sleep, but could offer more a rich variety of highly dynamic population macrotrends, analogous to how we measure economic health. Thoughts?
