I've been a poor sleeper for as long as I can remember, and in my youth, I wore this like a badge - somehow a testament of relentless grit 🤦🏿♂️. Only recently did I realize how sleep ties to a much larger health narrative. Steven Bartlett talks to multiple experts on this on his podcast The Diary Of A CEO An article published by the BMJ, shared by Alexey Kulikov last week, links our sleep patterns to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The poorer your sleep patterns, the higher the likelihood of developing #NCDs, which account for over 71% of all deaths globally, as reported by the World Health Organization. As we pursue Sustainable Development Goal 3.4 – reducing premature deaths from NCDs – it's crucial to ask, why aren't we talking more about sleep? Poor sleep isn't just a minor inconvenience in a fast-paced world; it's a significant #globalhealth concern. With healthcare systems worldwide already stretched, we need to focus on widely accessible first-line interventions. These include lifestyle changes like improving sleep hygiene, regular exercise, stress management techniques, and mindfulness practices. Simple yet effective. The role of #primarycare in this is key. Primary healthcare professionals, often the first point of contact, have a unique opportunity to identify sleep issues early. By incorporating questions about sleep patterns into general and routine consultations, they can raise awareness and connect the dots that could prevent the onset of NCDs linked to poor sleep. Moreover, equipping these professionals with the right training and resources to address sleep health is essential. After all, people are more likely to take health advice seriously from their trusted healthcare provider than from their well-rested-looking friend at the pub. Remember, #sleephealth is #health. #sdg3 Find the BMJ piece here:

HOPS || Natural support for sleep Clinical evidence indicates that hops is effective as a sleeping aid when used with valerian. 🌿 A systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) found that supplementation with hops and valerian combined improved at least one sleep parameter, often sleep latency and sleep quality, in patients with primary insomnia. 🌿 An RCT investigating the effects of hops and valerian combination on sleep parameters revealed that supplementation with hops and valerian improved sleep quality and duration after single dose administration. Recommended dosage: Hops extract (flowers or strobiles) 500 mg - 3 g at night before bed. Effects can be seen after one dose, however, it is traditionally used over multiple nights for best effects. 👉 For a full evidence-based list of key nutrients and herbs to support sleep and mental wellbeing, check out Dr Lesley Braun's Mental Wellbeing book here: https://brnw.ch/21wH7Dl #NervousSystem #MentalHealth #Hops #ComplementaryMedicine #EvidenceBased
