Meet Tina Wang, Associate Art Director on World of Warcraft 🐉 “My parents were first-generation immigrants from Taiwan, and video games were a huge part of my life growing up. I’ve made friendships through gaming that have lasted a lifetime. I wasn’t satisfied just being a player, though - I wanted to be a part of building these fantastical worlds for people to explore and make memories in. By college, my dream was to work for Blizzard, so I got practical: I geared my portfolio toward the unique art style of World of Warcraft, one of my favorite games of all time. I was fortunate enough to receive an art test and I was super nervous waiting to hear back! When I finally got the offer. I truly didn't believe I had the job until I was sitting in the office. And even then I wasn't totally confident someone wouldn't show up and tell me there had been a mistake. The collaborative nature of the games industry is incredibly fun. What motivates me is getting to work with others on a shared vision. The World of Warcraft team is very fulfilling in that regard. As I’ve grown older, it’s been interesting to see and reflect upon the influence that my culture has had on me, despite me feeling fairly Americanized at heart. It’s something I think about more and more these days as I have recently become a parent. I’m grateful that my work allows me to play a small part in bringing a wider variety of stories and perspectives to the world. My advice to artists looking to get into the gaming industry is to build a solid foundation in the fundamentals of successful visual design. Those foundational art skills will serve you well and be applicable throughout your career. If you want to work on a specific game, curate your portfolio to showcase a style of work that looks like it could fit into that game’s world. It makes it easy for hiring managers to imagine you as a great fit for their team!” #APIHeritageMonth

Meet Ed Tien, Sr. Recruiter for Global Early Careers 🌟   "If you’d asked me when I first joined Blizzard what made me want to work in the games industry, I might have told you something like ‘It’s super cool.’ I’m talking as a lifelong gamer here, with Warcraft and Diablo at the core of my childhood. But after being at Blizzard for some time now, I can tell you there’s so much more to it than that, and the environment and culture are just two of the reasons why I’ve stayed. There’s no better way to describe it than ‘fun.’    This is a place where you can be your authentic self. In other industries, I found myself trying to fit in and now, that’s not something I worry about. Being my real self has helped me learn more about who I am, and has allowed me to embrace the values and traditions my family celebrates. Because of this, I can really appreciate how much my culture has instilled in me and has influenced me as a person.  If I were to give some advice to anyone looking to join the gaming industry, I’d say perseverance is important. I had to apply to Blizzard a few times before I got this role! I took it upon myself to ‘level up’ my knowledge and skills to finally get in. It’s also important to work on transferable skills. Depending on the role, you won’t always need to have game industry experience, so it’s important to showcase the skills and knowledge that will enable you to do the job you’re aiming for.   I love campus recruiting, and the fact I can do it now at Blizzard is a dream come true." #APIHeritageMonth
