Disable eco mode or smash nest thermostats with a hammer?

ijasond

I’m sick and tired of coming home from a hot day of work to an 85 degree house thanks to “eco mode”. I’ve combed through 50 posts about this and google results and every one of them says to simply go into the google nest app and turn it off. The problem is that google forced me to migrate all my devices to the home app and I can no longer access my thermostats in the nest app. There is no option that anyone can show or I can find to disable this ridiculous eco mode that roasts my house daily. Theres seven people here and yet google still thinks we are away. It knows my phone is home and still insists that I’m away.

This is my last attempt to resolve this obscene control grab by google before I smash this waste of $300 with a hammer and go back to analog.

I like the convenience of app control, but I don’t need this frustration in my life. It ain’t worth it.

When the people who are home during the day turn the stat down manually, it still pushes itself back to eco mode. I do not consent to your ridiculous denial of my ability to be comfortable in my own home!

The Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E get installed in the Google Nest app but can also be accessed in the Google Home app, though, as @JWillRVA  said, some settings are only available in the Google Nest app. The Nest Thermostat gets installed in the Google Home app and can only be accessed in the Google Home app.

(Note that Google Nest has various ways of naming these three variations of its thermostats.)

If you had a Nest Learning Thermostat or a Nest Thermostat E working in the Google Nest app, it SHOULD still be fully accessible in the Google Nest app after migrating your Nest Account to a Google Account (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9297676), provided that you are logging into the Google Nest app using the "Sign in with Google" option using the same Google Account to which you migrated, and are accessing the same Google Nest "home/structure" in both apps.

Since we migrated in 2020, I don't know what Google Nest is currently telling customers. I also don't know why they would tell you that your Google Nest devices would no longer be accessible in the Google Nest app after migrating your Nest Account to a Google Account, since that is not true. We still use the Google Nest app for all of our 1st gen Google Nest cameras and doorbells, and we can also access them in the Google Home app.

You could try deleting and reinstalling the Google Nest app to see if that corrects the problem.

If that doesn't help, you could try contacting Support to find out why you can see your thermostat in the Google Nest app but can't access its settings (or can no longer see your thermostat in the Google Nest app--I'm not sure which you're experiencing):

1. Go to https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp.
2. Select a category/product family, and type in a brief description of the issue, then click "Next".
3. Click "Other", then click "Next step".
4. Under "Resources", just click "Next step". (Clicking one of the listed links will bring up a Help page page.)
5. Under "Contact options", choose to get a phone call or chat with the team, depending on availability in your country.

If you have the "Nest Thermostat" that gets installed in the Google Home app, then you are right, it CANNOT be accessed from the Google Nest app.

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9274936

But your first post says "I can no longer access my thermostats in the nest app", so I was confused; I don't understand how you could ever have accessed a "Nest Thermostat" in the Google Nest app.

From this "Set your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off" Help topic, it looks like, for the Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E, Google Nest provides a way to access and control Eco mode on the thermostat AND in the Google Nest app, but for the Nest Thermostat, you can do so only on the thermostat itself.

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9247301

And this Help topic, under "How Eco Temperature works", says:

"When you manually set your Nest Learning Thermostat or Nest Thermostat E to Eco Temperature, it'll stay in that mode and won't switch back to heating or cooling automatically until you manually switch it to one of those modes. Once you manually switch it to heating or cooling, your thermostat will resume switching automatically as people leave and come back home."

"Note: A Nest Thermostat works differently. It'll always switch out of Eco Temperature at the next scheduled temperature change. But you can set your thermostat manually to hold the Eco Temperature for up to 24 hours."

I don't know if any of this helps or not. If it does not, my apologies. Maybe part of the problem is due to issues with "Home/Away" mode. You could try contacting Support:

When you log into your Nest app do you still see the thermostat? Unfortunately many Nest devices features are still only accessible in the Nest app.

The Eco mode should be able to be disabled through settings in the Nest app.

No, after google required me to migrate my devices to the google home app I can no longer access the thermostats in the nest app. I have tried to add them again, but apparently it is no longer possible. I have read many other users reporting similar experiences.

Can you disable Home/Away assist?

No. I can toggle between home and away manually but can not turn it off.

@ijasond

The migration is NOT to the Google Home app, but from a Nest Account to a Google Account.

We don't have a Nest thermostat, but if your thermostat was installed in the Google Nest app, it should still be accessible in the Google Nest app (as well as in the Google Home app for some functions), as long as you are logging into the Google Nest app using the "Sign in with Google" option using the same Google Account to which you migrated, and are accessing the same Google Nest "home/structure" in both apps. We migrated in 2020 and are still using the Google Nest app for our 1st gen Google Nest cameras and doorbells.  (They are also accessible for some functions in the Google Home app.)

This is not accurate. It told me that I would have to download the google home app and that my devices would no longer be accessible in the best app. I can still access my google home in the best app, but can not control any devices. I have to do that in the google home app, just like google said I would when it prompted me to make the switch.

All of my cameras and locks are fully functional in both app. Nest app even has settings that are not accessible in the Home app.

Thank you for clarifying that. I do not have the e or learning, just the regular one so your information  confirms that it is no longer accessible in the nest app, though other parts of your post seem to contradict that.  I’ve seen 100 responses from people insisting that you can control them in the nest app, but I’m not dumb, I tried that. It’s not possible.
