🐌 #ContinuousCommunityClue No26: Community members become more valuable over time This feels obvious on the face of it, but when we run paid communities where members lose access after a period of time or through non-payment then we can see how much of a challenge building community can be when experienced members leave. This is also why I’m a fan of lifetime membership models. I wrote about it here: https://lnkd.in/embPiAJ6

#ContinuousCommunityClue No27 🌩 Rules are so important to the communities we build. They help form the culture, build safety and create important boundaries under which we operate. We can be creative with the rules we choose to adopt. The Chatham House Rule is one such example that helps create trust, openess and clear boundaries on the conversations that are being held. Read what The Chatham House is used for here: https://lnkd.in/eDjbiWVk

When we build community we want to aim to provide a certain amount of consistency, but perhaps not too much and not too little. Ala Goldilocks principle. It takes time to get to understand everything a community does. It’s an investment from a member to understand where and how all the pieces fit together. People don’t have time or energy to always be investing to understanding what is going on, but that doesn’t mean things can’t change. 🥁🥁🥁 Grow your community like a beat of the drum. We want a beat of a drum to feel the flow, but we also want to build upon our community flywheel by injecting something different. Something that will make us lift our head up and pay attention. Something that moves with the times. The beat provides the consistency and sustainability, the experiments bring new opportunities for community growth. -- This was #ContinuousCommunityClue No25. 🍄 "Community Thinking" is the easy part. “Doing Community” is a different ball game: It’s easy to talk about community. To debate what it is or isn’t. To discover ideas that seem to have worked for someone else. To apply experiences from hindsight. To develop the perfect strategy. To make your budgets look feasible and perfect. To justify using models and principles that seem to make sense It’s different when it comes to “Doing Community”. All those ideas, theories and tools are not necessarily wrong, but finding ways to use and apply them into your community is a completely different experience. Everything gets messy. Things don’t go according to plan. You fail where you think you will succeed. You succeed where you think you will fail. What people actually value is hard to discover. Strategies don’t go according to plan. And so much is outside of your control. #ContinuousCommunityClue No24: ❤️ Use Community Thinking to inspire you, but don’t forget that communities come together through doing. This post is inspired by Hung Lee. Thank you.

I bought a cushion of a “wheel of emotions” for the Rosieland Retreat I hosted last year. I wasn’t quite sure how I would use it, but the opportunity arose at the end of the day. We sat in a circle, took turns holding the cushion and looked for words to describe how we felt about the day that just happened. It was pretty cool to hear people describe their experience with what felt like more accuracy and stories that we might not have otherwise heard. How could you use a #WheelOfEmotions in your community? --- That was #ContinuousCommunityClue No22 from Continuous Community.
