Community Pub update. Around 9 months ago I posted on LinkedIn a request for help - my local pub had closed down and the rumours were not encouraging. Fast forward to now and we’ve: ✋ Registered the pub as an Asset of Community Value 🙏 Formed a Community Benefit Society with the legal power to acquire it 👂Engaged with the community to ask - what do we want and need? To Co-create an asset with longevity and diversity. ✅ Prepared a business plan and launched Community Share Offer to raise capital. Grant applications also underway. Not bad for a bunch of volunteers, and it has been a hugely empowering, galvanising and community-building experience - but there’s still a long way to go to secure the pub. My introduction to the benefits industry was from the ugly side of things. It was based on transactions, how much money we could make, and not paying attention to the result or the impact that it would have on the end user. The change in my philosophy happened when I actually saw that impact on people when they couldn't afford that deductible, they couldn't afford that service for their children. They couldn't use the benefits and then you grow up and you start to realize it's about people. It's about utilization. It's about taking care of a community. And my growth pattern was then to change. What is the result based on the recommendation provided? That recommendation carries weight because it will impact somebody. And that is now the focus. We have just lost our third long term Hire for our small venue in the past12 months. We rely on the small income from our hires and it’s so disappointing that they are all Welsh Government funded schemes moving to free spaces as WG aren't funding them fully either. All three are parent and baby groups, which had great attendance, so the need is there. The professionals running them want to stay in our community building, but have no say in the move, or cancellation of the provision all together   It’s a loss of approximately £5k a year to at Tanio, but more importantly, 4/5 hours a week of free engaging sessions for very isolated parents and their babies/toddlers, and new audiences for our work. The knock on effect is huge. It’s just so disheartening, money is short everywhere, but these relatively small amounts being withdrawn by WG are having such a huge knock on effect for the members of the community that are already struggling the most.   What can we do?
