🌀 I dug through 140pages of O.C. Tanner research to compile the business case for generalists Here's what I found: The rules of work have changed, but we're frozen in an old-school-hiring-&-work-system that isn't adapting with tech. I believe generalists are in what I'd call: 'a generational-super-position' Generalist skills are, now quite undoubtedly, the skills of the future. And shifts like this might happen just once in a generation. Alida Miranda-Wolff says 'we need to hire learners today to create better products, solutions, and markets, but also to set us up for a future where everyone will need to be a learner. Ultimately, the future of work is one that privileges learners" And I'll leave the final word to Vikram 'it’s time to rethink our love affair with depth' Let me know what you think? Main Point: Generalistic ai models seem to outperform more specialized ones, in this case atleast, in the fin context. This seems interesting to me and at first counterintuitive. Sources added. ------------------------------- I was reading today's newsletter by Ethan Mollick from 'One Useful Thing' and was struck with a feeling of, 'wait what?!' ------------------------------- Ethan writes "AI Models As I wrote in the last post, the power of the foundation model you use is a big deal, because the largest frontier models are, out-of-the-box, better at most things than smaller models, even smaller specialized models. Remember BloombergGPT, which was a specially trained finance LLM, drawing on all of Bloomberg's data? It made a bunch of firms decide to train their own models to reap the benefits of their special information and data. You may not have seen that GPT-4 (the old, pre-turbo version with a small context window), without specialized finance training or special tools, beat BloombergGPT on almost all finance tasks. This demonstrates a pattern: the most advanced generalist AI models often outperform specialized models, even in the specific domains those specialized models were designed for." ---------------------------------------- That's quite an interesting connection between the emergence of a.i. and the emergence of generalism in the workforce! Granted a generalistic a.i. does not 100% equal a generalistic human at this point, but the researchers findings did surprise me. It feels counterintuitive at first. However as Milly Tamati from Generalist World wrote in her most recent essay, to be adaptive is to be ready for whatever is to come. To be adaptive is to be able to develop and improve whatever is needed in the moment. Hence the Adaptive Economy. I see a link there. What do you think 👀 ? --------------------------------------- Speaking of links 😌 Milly's essay: https://lnkd.in/eUkJ-ei4 Ethan's blog: https://lnkd.in/eQzyCEEE The research mentioned: https://lnkd.in/e9X4k7Ne

Expert Generalist | 15+ Years in Tech & Innovation | 15+ Years in Strategy & Operations

People sometime chuckle at my “Expert Generalist” tagline, but now I feel heard… I have been looking for the next chapter of my career, including a pivot to climate work where I have no specific experience (yet). I have loads of experience and transferable skills, and I get excited about all sorts of problems that need solving where I know I can add value. But, I found that explaining that without sounding scattered is hard. Very few people I have talked to appreciate what I have to offer unless they are looking for exactly what is on my resume.   Today I came across Milly Tamati's Generalist World and went down a delightful rabbit hole, starting with "How to Win in the New Economy" (link in comments). She calls today an Adaptive Economy and says it is “an evolution of work whereby the most valuable skills will be leverage, learning, and spikiness.” Those skills are basically having a strong network, to always be learning, and allowing your career to look like a sine wave of alternatively sharpening your knowledge followed by a period of meaningful application of that knowledge. There are loads of great essays on Generalist World, including “Framework Friday” (link in comments) that has some great tips on how us proud Generalists can tell our stories differently. To complement all this, I recently completed Climate Drift's excellent Career Accelerator program (much more to come on that, stay tuned). One of the big lessons there was a proven framework for demonstrating transferrable skills in making a career transition into climate. I am excited to combine what I learned from Marco Morawec and Skander Garroum at Climate Drift with Milly Tamati's wisdom from Generalist World, I think that just might be the secret sauce. And thanks to Eirik Olsen, who led me to Milly Tamati!

"The average half-life of skills is now less than five years. In some tech fields it's half that. " Learn how "spikiness" can help you win in the new Adaptive Economy with Generalist World. This is not the first time I've shared some of their awesome learnings and it won't be the last. SUCH a good newsletter for those who take nontraditional paths and never stop learning.

I've been enjoying my emails from Generalist World and wanted to share the love. In the latest email, Milly Tamati talks about the adaptive economy and "#spikycareers." While she uses "spiky," I see us as adventurous and exploratory, the folks who discover where a road or trail leads. Fittingly, her inspiration for the latest email began while hiking in the mountains. #Generalists are expert learners, problem solvers, and big-picture thinkers who apply their strengths across varied fields and roles. They spot patterns in complexity and are often empathetic and future-focused. I love how Milly is rebranding generalists as essential to the adaptive economy. "Spiky" career adventurers unconfined by traditional boxes; crossing sectors, industries, domains, and roles, making moves in all directions. https://lnkd.in/g5HMrsFZ

👩🏻🎓 My gift guide for every kid graduating from high school or college this month... It only has one thing on it: this essay from Generalist World. We're in the middle of a big shift. We call all feeeeeeeeel it, can't we? What's happening now -- in the job market, the advancements (and hype) in AI, the speed of the market, the demands of your board -- it's a tectonic shift. TLDR: Once there was a shift to the industrial economy: you win when you fit into the system (those systems, the working conditions, the pollution, ew) Then came the knowledge economy: the more you know, the more you win (better) Now we're in the adaptive economy: you win through leverage (tools, distribution, network), learning (competencies fueled by a curious mindset), and spikiness (the ability to solve business problems through the application of mostly broad and sometimes deep expertise) As a committed generalist who's worked in a bunch of industries (fintech, health, tech); in all the models (B2B, B2C, and B2B2C); and, focused in marketing but with ability to ideate on commercialization, innovation, product development, and partnerships -- I'm biased. History (and those folks on your gift list) will decide, but I think Milly Tamati's thesis is spot on.
