Spotify is all about #innovation, especially when it comes to data-driven features like year-end summaries and friends' playlists. In February, they dropped an awesome pilot project that masquerades as a DJ, but it's actually a service where an #AI DJ voice creates playlists and explains song choices during transitions. Due to its massive success, they're now expanding this service to more countries (already in the US, Canada, and 50 more, with more to come). Why is this so cool? 1. Imagine your thoughts spoken out loud, putting a grin on your face. It's like a friend pointing out that you've played a song a bunch, probably because it lifts your spirits! 😄 2. Remember the radio? This is like a hip radio show where the host curates tunes and shares thoughts as you groove. It's that familiar friend with a new twist. 3. It's marketing magic, keeping the excitement alive. Interesting watch. I don't necessarily agree with everything said there, but there's a lot of accurate and good information that you may not be fully aware of. Streaming services are likely not going anywhere as they provide what the vast majority of (casual) music listeners need and want: convenience and easy access to music. And for musicians, at least at this point, you can't really choose not to be there because you need to go to market somehow, and this currently is the market. So you choose to accept that you're not going to make a lot of money of it, instead you use it as a promotional tool to build/expand a fan base in order to monetize elsewhere (touring, merch etc). And to be honest, hasn't it always been like that, kind of? Selling your records on whichever media was selling at the time out of your trunk until you'd sing a record deal with a big label which would often not be that great for you? What I personally believe should be done is using DSPs as secondary platforms and PR tools, and focus your primary efforts on building a "super-fan" base by going directly to your fans in more of an exclusive fashion. I see a number of platforms emerging that can help you do exactly that, and I'm not necessarily talking about Bandcamp (mentioned in the video) or similar. One that comes to mind is and I think is a good example is EVEN. Anyway, the video is definitely worth 17 minutes of your time!

Spotify Wrapped is back and even better! It’s that time of year where everyone is sharing their #SpotifyWrapped. First released in 2016, the viral tradition has taken over social media and this year’s no different. It has become a popular year-end tradition for Spotify users, offering a nostalgic and reflective look back at their musical journey over the past year. This year, though, something caught our attention (thanks to RNIB!). It’s the first year that #SpotifyWrapped can be navigated using a screen reader. That means those who are blind and partially sighted can find out their top artists, songs, genres and lots more! We love this! Inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do here at Magenta and we know first-hand how much of a difference small changes can make.
