June marks the start of hurricane season in the U.S., and 2024 is expected to be one of the most active years on record.* At Etsy, we’re working to help creative makers easily find and navigate crucial disaster readiness and response information when they need it. Etsy recently joined forces with nonprofit Nest and the Environmental Defense Fund to publish free resource guides aimed at helping small and micro businesses prepare for and recover from natural disasters when they strike. The guides include numerous local and federal resources, as well as best practices on how to manage a business during an emergency. The guides aim to help our sellers – and all home-based creative business owners – increase their long-term resiliency in the face of climate change. Etsy is proud to offer this resource to our community at this critical moment. Find the guides here: https://lnkd.in/gaQR7bfU *Source: NOAA

At Etsy, we’re all about Keeping Commerce Human. So how can we use AI to make shopping on our site more human, not less? Etsy Chief Technology Officer Rachana Kumar, our head of Search, Mahir Yavuz, and a few of our engineers recently had the opportunity to attend Microsoft Build – one of the tech industry’s biggest developer events – to discuss just that. At the conference, Rachana, Mahir and Microsoft’s Jennifer Marsman shared how we’ve leveraged Microsoft’s GPT models to transform the shopping experience on Etsy through groundbreaking product experiences, like our recently-launched Etsy Gift Mode™. Rachana also joined a panel to share our history of leveraging machine learning and discuss the future of Gen AI at Etsy. Thanks to the #MSbuild team and shoutout to Rachana and Mahir for spreading the word about Etsy’s work to unlock opportunities to leverage cutting edge technology to further our mission to connect buyers and sellers around the world, and Keep Commerce Human. It’s that time of year: Code Mosaic! 🎉 Code Mosaic is Etsy’s annual gathering of our product and engineering teams for a week of creativity and collaboration on coding projects outside of folks’ usual day-to-day. Here’s how it works: 💡Engineers self-organize into teams to work on projects they are excited about, each of which correlates to a theme, whether it be optimizing our coding base or crafting an innovative feature for our marketplace. 🛠️The teams spend most of the week working on their projects: collaborating with folks they don’t usually get to work with, learning from each other, and experimenting with solutions. 🎉At the end of the week, the teams present their projects, and a champion is named by a panel of judges. We’re so proud of our teams for the joy, creativity and innovative thinking they brought to the table this year. We can’t wait to see how some of these projects will positively impact our marketplace moving forward!

“My guess is that in the future, our marketplace is going to have an even bigger scale, but it will feel smaller to any individual because we'll be better at finding just those products that you're looking for and giving them to you when you need them.” On the latest episode of Building One, I talk with Nicholas Daniel, chief product officer at Etsy. In his 10+ years at the company, Nick has worked across every part of Etsy’s business — one that has grown to nearly seven million sellers providing millions of crafted goods to over 90 million customers. In my conversation with Nick, we discuss making the best of career challenges, how and why Etsy differentiates itself from other marketplaces and the limits of relying on product performance metrics. Check out the full episode to learn more insights from Nick on how he is using community engagement, data, and even AI to keep Etsy competitive within the super competitive market dynamics of e-commerce.

At Etsy, our teams are constantly working to keep our marketplace safe and special, so we can elevate the best of what our sellers have to offer. Today, Etsy published our annual Transparency Report for 2023, a detailed overview of our policy enforcement efforts over the last year, and a look into the priorities that are already underway for 2024. A few highlights: 🔸In 2023, we doubled the total number of listings we removed for violating our policies compared to the year prior. 🔸We removed four times as many listings for violating our Handmade Policy in 2023 than the previous year. 🔸We reduced the amount of policy-violating items users see when they search Etsy by 60% compared to 2022. While we’re extremely proud of the progress our teams have made over the last year, we know there’s more work to do. In 2024, we’ll continue to expand these efforts, from improving policy enforcement efforts to protecting our communities from spam and scams. This evening Etsy reported our first quarter results. “Our first quarter performance, while in line with our guidance, was pressured by the challenging environment for consumer discretionary products, which continues to be a headwind to Etsy marketplace growth,” said Josh Silverman, CEO of Etsy. “That said, we are encouraged by the meaningful progress we have made to improve customer experiences that we expect will drive buyer consideration and frequency over time, and we are working with focus and urgency to set the foundation to reignite Etsy marketplace growth. I’m confident that leaning into our differentiators to make Etsy even more Etsy will help ensure we stand out in the sea of sameness in e-commerce.” To watch the full video earnings call, see investors.etsy.com.
