What is one tip you'd give to a woman looking to start her business today? Don't be afraid to start the side hustle, and it's okay to keep it a side hustle for a while! Starting a business is expensive, and using your day job to fund it and get your business off the ground is 100% okay. You can start small and grow into your vision instead of jumping right in and going in large debt. How do you support other women-owned businesses? As JASMIN BRAND says, we are the BANK! I do my best to always shop from women businesses when I can for supplies. Thinking about brands through the context of audiences is a no brainier. And yet, the cultural marketing obsession with youth means many are leaving a huge segment of the market feeling unable to relate. They have money and they want to spend it. It reminds me of a P&G skincare innovation project i led a few years ago. I designed research groups to consist of 5 female friends, age 40+ in their homes. I had lots of stim for it, but the most valuable insights came from listening to how the friends related to and challenged each other’s answers. Things like “I hate selfies as when I take a photo I don’t recognise the person starting back at me anymore” or “I don’t want to look like anyone else I just want to look like me again”. It was vulnerable, often hilarious and poignant. We got some incredible and fresh insights for positioning and designing the brand, plus a brilliant go to market strategy and business model. It helped us design a category of 1 for them. All of which to say, consumer insights are all well and good when delivered in a report or document by someone else. But if you really want to step out of the fray and connect with new cohort, you can do nothing more value than going and talking to them. Listening to their hopes, dreams and fears. Seeing the world through their eyes, broadening your own perspective.

As I watch different conversations on Threads and the community feel, it made me think of when I started my moms in business organization back in 2019. I knew I wanted it to be more than just meeting someone or twice then calling it a day. I knew I didn’t want it to be another organization doing business development. I knew I wanted it to help other moms in business but how? It took some playing around, spending money, etc only to to be back at square 1. Where do I go from here? A lightbulb finally went off. I went back through my notes and everything was there. Women wanted to build connections authentically, we wanted a true place to celebrate each other, we wanted support in our business, and more. So that’s what I created. There are already so many amazing businesses & entrepreneurs in the world, so instead of creating something completely new, we collab instead. Even though it’s currently not operating, I still kept many of the relationships I built with it and at least once a month, I have someone bring it up and/or asking if I’m planning something new. Right now, I’m enjoying joining other outlets, 1-1’s,etc but there may be something in the future 😏. In what ways do you continue to build up your own conmunity/network? It's Woman Entrepreneurs Day! ~40% of businesses in the US are women-owned. Entrepreneurs have some of the toughest jobs... compounding that with gender-biases makes it exponentially difficult for women entrepreneurs to survive, sustain and thrive. In 2015, when my husband and I launched our first business, it was an unwavering decision to employ women-owned vendor to build prototypes and bring first MVP to market. Eventually, our marketing was and is managed by women, and fulfillment by a husband-wife owned shop. As a business owner, I know how grueling the grind is. Recognizing this day at workplace is equally important, to foster an intrapreneurial, inclusive environment, encouraging women's needs to create and operate fearlessly.
