We’ve wrapped a busy day in Brussels, meeting folks to get into the weeds of the EU AI Act, implementation, codes of practice, and what opportunities there are for Creative Commons to bring a more nuanced approach to the opt-out regime by introducing gradients based on preferences. Rather than only allowing a simple signal of “no AI”, we need to offer some choices that strike a balance between creator choice and commons preservation. For instance, if folks can say “no” or “no, unless the use is in the public interest”, it’s likely there are plenty who would opt for the latter, so that access to knowledge and research can remain unencumbered. Gratitude to the EU policymakers who made time for meetings, and to the Center for Data Innovation for the midday Tech 101 event featuring my colleague Brigitte Vézina. Fantastic “Tech 101 for EU AI Policy” event in Brussels yesterday organized by Ayesha Bhatti from the Center for Data Innovation on #AI and the creative sector. It was a good opportunity to present Creative Commons’ efforts to offer an alternative to the binary opt-out regime with our work on #PreferenceSignals which would offer an effective means to express the nuances of how creators want to share in the commons. A thriving commons depends on creators sharing their works! Insights from co-panelists Caroline De Cock and Annelise Badinand and from participants were really thought-provoking too! It was also great to hold fruitful meetings with EU policymakers alongside my colleagues Anna Tumadottir and Mark Foster.
