Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.
About us
About the Wikimedia Foundation The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to access that knowledge freely. We host Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive. The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive donations from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $15. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. The Wikimedia Foundation is a United States 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California, USA.

“As Chief Communications Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that hosts Wikipedia, Anusha Alikhan is inviting everyone to contribute to women’s history.” Our very own CCO Anusha Alikhan was recognized by Chief with The New Era of Leadership Award for Purpose. Anusha has been a strong spokesperson for the Wikipedia Needs More Women campaign, which supports the work of global Wikimedia volunteers in increasing content about women to Wikipedia, as well as engaging more women contributions from around the world on our projects. 👏 https://lnkd.in/dEg8A5Be

The Wikimedia movement is a global community of contributors to Wikimedia projects, like Wikipedia, which are united by the vision of empowering everyone to share in the sum of human knowledge. No matter your country, skill set, or interests, there’s a place in our movement for you. 🌟🌐 Wikimedia affiliates include chapters, thematic organizations, and user groups. 📚 Chapters are independent nonprofits that support the movement's work, focusing on a specific location in the world – such as Wikimedia Deutschland, the very first chapter to be created almost 20 years ago. 🌍 Thematic organizations are also nonprofits, but they support work around a specific topic, regardless of country. Amical Wikimedia, for example, focuses on the Catalan language and culture. 🔍 User groups are open membership groups of Wikimedians that can be based on geography or specific interests. They are designed to be easy to start. Two examples: the Wikimedia Community User Group Côte d'Ivoire, for Wikimedians living in or connected to Côte d'Ivoire, and Wikimedia LGBT+, which promotes the development of LGBTQI+ content on Wikimedia projects and supports LGBTQI+ individuals engaged in Wikimedia activities. 🤝 Do you have an idea for a user group? Take your favorite local museum to where the visitors are by sharing it on Wikimedia projects 🖼️📖 The theme for this year’s International Museum Day is “Museums for Education and Research”. Wikimedia projects help support that goal by ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for everyone, everywhere. When you share your local museum on Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia and its sister projects, you help #OpenTheKnowledge. Since 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has celebrated International Museum Day on 18 May. And since 2020, Wikimedia Switzerland (Wikimedia CH) has organized an associated Wikimedia campaign with European affiliates, mostly from German-speaking countries. This year, Wikimedia Switzerland and the Wikimedia Foundation are encouraging a more global celebration of museums. Wikimedia collaborators are invited to respond to three challenges to increase museum coverage on our free knowledge projects: translation, media, and data. Join us ➡️ https://w.wiki/A2aZ

You are probably familiar with Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia. But did you know that it is the product of a larger ecosystem called the Wikimedia movement? The Wikimedia movement, or free knowledge movement, is the global community of contributors to the 14 Wikimedia free knowledge projects, including Wikipedia. This community shares the same fundamental belief: Knowledge should be free and accessible to all. Underlying these platforms, there is a technology infrastructure that enables anyone in the world to help advance human knowledge. Our dedicated editors, administrators, and contributors are the backbone of our movement. It is through their passion and strength that the movement continues to grow. We invite you to look at the Wikimedia projects and consider where you might be able to join the community. Explore the possibilities ➡️ https://w.wiki/3yr6

How can we achieve an open, free, and secure digital future for everyone? This is what the Global Digital Compact aims to address. Through a consultation process involving several stakeholders, the Global Digital Compact will be the most comprehensive attempt ever at creating a vision for a shared approach to governing digital technologies. The Wikimedia Foundation, along with 12 Wikimedia affiliates, published an open letter calling on UN Member States to include commitments in the Global Digital Compact that can allow online public interest projects, such as Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, to thrive. By protecting these projects and the communities that create them, the international community can ensure that the digital environment advances sustainable development and human rights. Since the letter was published on 23 April, more than 216 individuals from over 50 countries and 11 new organizations committed to online public interest projects have signed it.
