Early this month—to kick off #TeacherAppreciationWeek—Google for Education invited me and one of our wonderful Born This Way Foundation advisory board members, Jen Lee, to Washington, DC to participate in a Fireside Chat on mental health + wellbeing with our National Teachers of the Year from each state. It was an honor to be among such an inspiring group of educators committed to their own as well as their students’ mental health and wellbeing. (Fun fact: It was especially meaningful to be there since my mom is a 2005 nationally-recognized educator too!) #educatorwellbeing #NTOY

We are experiencing a youth mental health crisis. Young people worldwide are increasingly struggling to manage the escalating stress and complications of everyday life. In 2021, 42% of high school students reported feeling so sad or hopeless for two consecutive weeks that they would stop engaging in their usual activities, up from 26% in 2009. Is there a way to eliminate the stigma around mental health and make kindness cool? In the latest WebMD Health Discovered episode, our host, Neha P., spoke to Claudia-Santi F. Fernandes, EdD, LPC, and Rahul Rangan, MBBS of Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, about the ways peer-to-peer support can benefit today’s youth, the vital mental health resources needed in schools, and the impact of Born This Way Foundation’s Be There Certificate and their Channel Kindness program on building a kinder and braver world. With his organization Afghan Girls Success Gate, Aman has helped to educate over 600 girls and women in Afghanistan in the fields of language, literacy, and mental health. "With the dawn of Taliban rule came the implementation of harsh policies, particularly against Afghan women, I couldn't sit idly by while my sisters and fellow Afghan women faced oppression and discrimination." #ChannelKindness #BeKind365 #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth
