Default Speaker No Longer Works

ScottG69

On my Nest Hub Max I have a default speaker set to a Chromecast Audio device. This had worked for a very long time. But about 6 months ago, this stopped working.

If I say play music on the specific speaker, it works fine. It's just the default speaker when I don't specify, that does not work.

Can some help?

Hello ScottG69,

Thank you so much for posting in this community. It seems that your Nest Hub Max's default speaker setting for Chromecast Audio isn't working as you expected. Don't worry; I´m here to assist you with some troubleshooting tips.

Reset the default speaker:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap on "Favorites" or "Devices."
  3. Tap and hold on to the tile of your Nest Hub Max.
  4. Go to "Settings" > "Audio."
  5. In the bottom right corner, tap "Reset."

Check Speaker Group Settings:

There might be a chance your Chromecast Audio is accidentally part of a speaker group. This could override the default setting.

  1. In the Google Home app, tap on your Nest Hub Max.
  2. Go to "Settings" > "Audio."
  3. See if there's a speaker group selected under "Default music speaker."
  4. If there is, try disabling it and see if Chromecast Audio works as the default again.

Based on the information that you have provided, check out this article on how to create and manage speaker groups and learn more about them.

I hope this information helps,

Daniel.
