On behalf of our members - health leaders in England – we are calling on the next government to protect local NHS organisations from having to further cut staffing levels to make ends meet at a time when the needs of their patients are so high. Take a look at our latest report, based on a survey of our members 🔗 https://bit.ly/3VqqaPC Responding to our survey, NHS leaders they told us they face “drastic measures” to make ends meet as NHS responds to its tightest financial settlement in years. Some key findings: ➡ 67% of respondents from NHS trusts and ICBs plan to reduce clinical staff to meet their cost saving targets. 90% plan to reduce non-clinical staff. ➡ 74% of primary care leaders responding said they will have to reduce clinical staff, and 79% plan to cut non-clinical staff. This is despite data showing over 110,000 vacancies across the NHS in England, including nearly 9,000 medical posts. This short-term risk to freeze or cut posts doesn’t help with the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan’s commitment to grow the NHS’s headcount. Some leaders said they will have to cut some services altogether or reduce the range of services they offer. One NHS trust chief executive told us: “I do not believe that it is possible for us to deliver all our financial, performance, workforce and quality/safety requirements next year – something has to give.” The landscape is made more difficult by the impact of industrial action – which has already led to >1.4million appointments or procedures being cancelled and cost the NHS around £3bn – and the significant costs of maintaining an ageing NHS estate. More on the capital and estates challenges here 🔗 https://bit.ly/3wWWKPv ***So what’s needed?*** Health leaders want the main political parties to safeguard local NHS organisations from having to freeze or cut clinical and non-clinical posts, especially given the task ahead in reducing waiting lists. The next government must ensure the NHS has the resources it needs. This includes at least £6.4bn of capital investment, commitment to fund the long term workforce plan, and a similar plan to be published for social care. More here on our election asks here 🔗 https://bit.ly/4bOpCsJ

A key call from our members ahead of the general election on 4th July is that whoever forms the next government, they to avoid a top-down structural reorganisation of the NHS. 🗳️ The chair of our ICS Network board, Dr Kathy McLean OBE, spoke to the Health Service Journal about why such a move would be counterproductive, the benefits ICS are already bringing to local communities and what more they are seeking to do. 🗞️
