About us

The Health Foundation is an independent charity committed to bringing about better health and health care for people in the UK. Our aim is a healthier population, supported by high quality health care that can be equitably accessed. From giving grants to those working at the front line to carrying out research and policy analysis, we shine a light on how to make successful change happen. We use what we know works on the ground to inform effective policymaking and vice versa. We believe good health and health care are key to a flourishing society. Through sharing what we learn, collaborating with others and building people’s skills and knowledge, we aim to make a difference and contribute to a healthier population.

#NetworkedData Lab analysis from November 2023 finds that data held by GPs and local authorities identified at most a quarter of unpaid carers. There are at least 5 million unpaid carers in England and Wales, playing a vital role in society. But as our earlier research highlighted, only a small minority receive direct support from their local authority. The under-recording of unpaid carers has implications for local authorities, GPs, integrated care bodies and policymakers. Without a more complete picture of people’s needs, they cannot provide support to the people who need it most. Through the Networked Data Lab, the Health Foundation worked with four local partners across England and Wales, using novel data linkages to improve understanding of their carer populations. We found that, as well as better identifying unpaid carers, to fully support them in their valuable work, the NHS and social care need adequate resources and to appropriately prioritise carer support. #CarersWeek Read more ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eydJdsrN

We are delighted to launch our new podcast series: Leading Improvement in Health and Care. Each month, we’ll explore the learning and experiences of people making change across systems. Our first episode – Morale – is now live and explores how to improve staff engagement. Director of Patient and Staff Experience at The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Annie Laverty, talks about using data to understand what matters to staff and enhance engagement. We also hear from John Drew, Director of Staff Engagement and Experience at NHS England, who discusses using the NHS staff survey to steer improvement and how we might engage people better on productivity. Hosted by Penny Pereira, Managing Director of Q at the Health Foundation, and Matthew Taylor of NHS Confederation, each episode aims to spotlight where improvement is working well, as well as the challenges along the way. Joined by speakers from a variety of roles, we’ll explore the ways improvement can sustainably transform health and care. This podcast is part of Learning and Improving Across Systems, a partnership between NHS Confederation, the Q Community and us. 🎧 Listen now ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eaFUFR3w

Ahead of the #GeneralElection, we have identified five key priorities that the next UK government should focus on in order to build a healthier UK. The NHS is in crisis and many people are unable to get the care they need. Pressures are being felt right across the system, with record waiting lists for hospital treatment, lives being lost due to the strain on urgent and emergency services, and people struggling to see their GP. Strengthening capacity and resilience requires a mix of policy change and long-term investment to aid the NHS's recovery from the current crisis and ensure people get the care they need. Learn more about this and the other priorities that make up our top five, including our rundown of the key actions the next government should consider in its policymaking 👇 https://lnkd.in/emsQzHwz [Alt text: Strengthening capacity and resilience in the NHS]

NEW: Today we launch the first of our #GeneralElection briefings calling for the next government to take urgent action to improve and invest in the nation’s health and reduce health inequalities. We set out the steps needed to improve health. The new government must: 👉 put health at the heart of its work – through a shift to a prevention-led approach to public spending backed by changes to Treasury rules 👉 address the gaps in the building blocks of health, particularly in more deprived parts of the UK including urgent action to tackle poverty 👉 take population-level action on the leading risk factors for ill health 👉 increase local government funding and restore the public health grant, ensuring fair allocation to meet local needs 👉 orient health and care services towards prevention, with a greater share of the funding on primary, community and preventative services. Read the briefing ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eknExbPu [Alt text: How can the next government take prevention from rhetoric to reality?]
