I just feel like even if we all vote and Biden wins, Trump won't accept the loss, and eventually they'll just put him in anyway. And then there won't be another real election. Even if Biden wins and somehow is actually confirmed (which again, I think is unlikely) we're going to have to do this for 30 more years because of the SC, and that isn't at all sustainable.

All this isn't to say I won't vote but I just think people are being way too optimistic about what happens if Biden wins. I don't think him winning will keep Trump out or the horrible fascist future at bay.

Look, I get the fear. I do, I do... but this is also one of the times when you have to ask if it's actually telling you something true, or if it's just preying on that generalized feeling of doom to make everything seem hopeless even if we win again. And that is... there is absolutely no actual mechanism for Trump to be installed as president if Biden wins the Electoral College (since as we have repeatedly seen, the popular vote is immaterial). SCOTUS is horrible and evil and are trying to interfere as much ahead of time for Trump as they can, but part of that is because they can't simply issue an order for Biden to be removed and Trump to become God King By Fiat. That is not how it works. If Biden wins in November, he will be president until his term ends, he steps down, Kamala takes over, or anything else.

Trump tried a coup with all the entire overwhelming might of the US government as the sitting president last time; fortunately, it failed. Reforms to the Electoral Count Act have been made to prevent another January 6. The Department of Defense and the military are still under (and would be on another January 6) Biden's command, not Trump's. That's not to say that Trump won't try some shit with his insane cult followers, but he is just a late 70s conman from Queens out on bail and under sentence for a criminal trial, who is already the biggest and most disgraced loser and asshole in American political history. He is so desperate to cheat his way back into power because in a real sense, this IS the last-chance saloon for him. He can't put off the legal proceedings, however long they take, for another four years. He's losing his marbles at a rapid rate. I'm just saying: we don't know what or when, but there will be (and already have been) real consequences for him. That is why he is scrabbling so hard.

"Even if we vote, nothing matters and Trump will win anyway" is another of those insidious lies that works to make you feel as if the battle is endless and pointless and none of its victories matter. Of course it will not all be magically fixed forever if Biden wins. We will still have to figure some godforsaken fucking way to expand SCOTUS or kick Alito and Thomas off it. But we will have bought ourselves, our democracy, our country, and the world time to do that, and put another nail in Trump's coffin. That matters. It matters a lot.

Fascism wants to present itself as overwhelming, irresistible, inevitable, and ready to happen no matter what you do, and that's what your brain wants you to buy in now. But that's not the case, Trump is not inevitable or some all-powerful monolith (in fact, another of the debate takeaways seemed to be that Biden looked bad but people still hate Trump too much for it to really shift anything). He is a loser, a fraud, a conman, a liar, and a crook, and he WANTS you to fear him like an almighty god. Don't give him or the MAGAGOP the satisfaction.

Frankly, having to endure another four months of this might kill us all, and I know that we are tired and scared (me too). But IT IS NOT INEVITABLE THAT WE ARE DOOMED. Not at all. Let's hang onto that and tell that anxiety doom voice to shove it.

Hugs.

the triple burden (housework, childcare AND paid employment) IS a real issue that feminists have been discussing for decades... but the way tiktok tradfem tradwife girlies have twisted that into "it's too much stress for women to take on all the housework AND work full-time, so we should ~nurture our divine femininity~ by quitting our jobs becoming housewives and relying completely on our Strong Men to support us financially!!" rather than "it's too much stress for women to take on all the housework AND work full-time, so maybe men could start pulling their fucking weight around the house more and do the dishes every now and again"

Bridgerton inspired Pink Gown

I made this gown after season 2 but didn't actually take picture until now. its been hanging living room for a year. I love this fabric but sadly the store I got it from closed down soon after I bought it. I would love more of it.

the gloves didn't stay on long

I think we need to get more comfortable with the idea that sometimes shitty, racist, homophobic, bigoted people are still incredibly talented.

I feel like every time I see a post addressing someone’s shitty behavior the post also takes the time to mention that they’re not even good at [x] anyway. And that’s just not always true? Equating being good at a skill as being morally good is just not necessary. Someone can be a fantastic writer, can have a beautiful singing voice, can create breathtaking artwork, and still be a horrible person.

I know part of this is probably just the instinct to dislike everything about a person when you dislike them, but I also think this mindset leads to people defending creatives way past where they should, because if bad people create bad art, then if this person creates art that I like and resonates with me, then they can’t be a bad person!

And you know. That’s just not true. Those two things are simply completely unconnected and I think it’d be healthier if we all started disconnecting them in our heads.

You must kill the voice in your mind that tells you that good art is only made by moral, upstanding people. The most monstrous people you have ever met are capable of art that would make you weep. It is the contradiction at the heart of the human experience.

We create to create, not because we are good or bad. We critique the worldview and beliefs forwarded by that art, but the craft of the art can still be excellent.

Creation is not ethical or moral. It is human.

hope I'm not too far off-base with this addition but I think this stuff is also important because like... if you let yourself get into the habit of thinking this way (that is, looking at things in black and white and assuming good art is made by good people), you ALSO risk turning into the sort of person who can never just dislike something as a matter of personal taste. y'know, the type of person who thinks a movie is boring or unfunny and immediately goes on their phone to dig up dirt on the actors, or who only feels comfortable criticizing something when they can find moral confirmation for emotional responses that they're afraid might need defending. at minimum it's a very shallow way to engage with art and prevents you from properly considering why YOU personally like or don't like things, and at worst it can make you insufferable and/or difficult to trust, because people start to wonder if they're just one bad interaction away from you deciding they're not only annoying but probably secretly evil too.

shitty people often make great art and do nice things, and the kindest and coolest people in the world are still capable of creating lackluster things or hurting people's feelings. people are complex like that, you have to approach them with more nuance than a cartoon character or you're gonna lose track of your priorities very easily

I had to read Gone with the Wind for an English class. Yes, I read the whole thing, not using sparknotes or what-have-you to cheat my way through. (Side tangent: I’ve seen fanfics that are longer than this book, which is just damn impressive when you have a printed comparison in hand)

I honestly enjoyed how well written it was, and the attention to detail to the events of the war. That did not make it any less racist.

Being able to critically think about complex issues like this makes you a better citizen. And knowing how to balance being informed or taking enjoyment in something but not necessarily agreeing with it in whole (or vice versa) is also beneficial in both your personal and social life.

To that end: There are plenty of times I thought a popular movie or piece of art was not for me, and times when I found enjoyment in really bad or cheesy or unfamiliar things. Knowing how to accept that as it is is the difficult part, but you come to learn more about yourself, or grow more confident in yourself, for it.

while there are legitimate examples of hypocritical thinking in...probably every subculture imaginable i feel like at least 80% of the posts online that are like "people say they want X, but then they do contradictory behaviour Y" are describing two different people with opposing opinions

here is my favorite variation of this point, because it inexplicably uses various goomba variants to make its point

There’s more content on ao3 for my old Latin textbook curriculum than there is for raid shadow legends and I think that says a lot

Avatar
alegazzi

wait hold on let’s set raid to the side why’s your latin curriculum on ao3

It’s a series of a couple books that follow the story of a Roman family and you have to learn grammar and translate each chapter

I read through the results and apparently a lot of people ship Cornelia (daughter/main girl) and Flavia (her friend who was there for like 4 chapters and never again)

So my Latin textbook’s fandom’s most popular ship is gay, basically

I mean, we’re surprised that your Latin textbook can drink water. We’re not particularly caught off guard by the fact that that water is wet.

Basically I think that part of the problem driving the culture war is that things that were formerly said by members of an in-group about members of an outgroup behind their backs are now being said in a permanent form that is accessible to all over social media, and this makes people hate each other way more than they otherwise would and harden against one another. I don't think it's useful to look at it in terms of individual virtue, you need to look at social dynamics.

There's a huge difference between "own space" conversations and "public space" conversations that has just gotten lost in the age of social media. Like, there are tons of shared experiences and implied caveats and even baseline understanding that you can assume in an in-group space that get lost in public spaces. And that's before you get into things like in-group venting, where you might just need to say something in the most shitty, un-nuanced, unpolished way to vent your spleen, whereas in mixed company you'd want to spend more time to ensure you're expressing things correctly.

And now more and more people have grown up online and never really had access to private own spaces, and feel like having those conversations in public spaces is natural and correct. So the orthodoxy becomes that, actually, real allies can hear any amount of shitty, cruel, thoughtless shit about themselves and it will never affect them. Actually, if there's any amount of cruelty that can drive you out of a community, then you were always a fake. Or, conversely, that you must always tone police yourself forever. That anything shitty, said off the cuff in frustration, represents your truest, most genuine self. Any more measured and nuanced thought is the mask, your worst self is mask off.

Nobody is their best self all the time, people experience emotions and need to vent, but having our rawest moments be in public spaces instead of own spaces is bad for everyone.

i feel like one of the weirdest realizations you (or at least i) eventually have a few years into transitioning and being mostly around other trans people, is that moment where u notice that like ur brains mapping of like specific voices to specific genders is just kinda gone. like it rly is just all social constructs programmed into u by society, and living outside societies idea of gender just kinda melts that shit away, and it's not just voices, like other traditionally gendered attributes also suddenly don't matter anymore*

*except for myself of course, i am obviously totally failing at being a girl but everyone is doing it perfectly, dysphoria is so awesome lmao

the real deep message here btw isn't just about gender, but about the general ability of the human brain to shed off bad socialization and habits if we change the environment we're in for the better and i feel like that's massive

So many hours it took me to complete the newly invented double knit twisted rib bind off on this cowl! The bind off was developed for me by a member of one of my fibre communities and they did such a fantastic job as it is stretchy and completely matches the invisible cast on. I put it over a pool noodle raft to block so it will dry nice & smooth all the way around.

Hat tip @eloso ! Lots of innovation in that

Screaming? Can I screaming? SCREAMING.

This is incredible!

Time for a new poll! I'm curious to see the spread of answers on this one (and hear any other series not on the list.) Tried to go for a range of older and newer series on here, more on the older end of the spectrum, but I can't cover everything with the limited poll options here, so I hope you'll share your answers! :)

Please reblog for a larger sample size, thank you!
