Mexico
Earthquake
The challenge
Mexico is known for its cultural heritage, with monuments constructed by ancient civilizations. However, these magnificent archaeological sites are not immune to the powerful effects of natural catastrophe events. Following a series of earthquakes in 2017, the Mexican government was unable to find enough capacity to protect these sites through the traditional insurance market, leaving them partially uninsured and vulnerable.
Mexico
Windstorm
The challenge
Research has shown that there is a connection between a healthy coral reef and the region’s ability to sustain itself economically. In other words, if the Mesoamerican coral reef off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula were to die as a result of pollution and storm damage, it would no longer be able to prevent beach erosion, which, in turn, would threaten the region’s key source of income, tourism.
United States of America
Flood
The challenge
The area surrounding New York City is increasingly prone to sea level rise and floods and low-income residents are disproportionately affected. In addition, these residents often struggle to access the financial resources necessary to recover from flood damage.
Puerto Rico
Earthquake & Tropical Cyclone
The challenge
In 2017, Hurricanes Irma and Maria hit Puerto Rico, causing massive losses and leaving residents without electricity. In 2020, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Puerto Rico, leaving parts of the island without electricity again. Our client, a state-owned enterprise responsible for the electricity power generation, distribution, and transmission in Puerto Rico, suffered considerable economic losses as a result of the damages to insured property and from the interruption of their business.
Uruguay
Drought
The challenge
90% of Uruguay’s energy is supplied by hydropower, which is being progressively impacted by climate change. In a year of drought, the country relies upon costly alternatives such as imported crude oil and electricity from Argentina and Brazil, which has a significant impact on the state budget.
Morocco
Agriculture
The challenge
Morocco initiated plans to strengthen its agriculture sector, because it plays a key role in the country’s economic and social development, employing around 50% of the population. Agriculture in Morocco faces numerous climate-related risks, ranging from drought to wind and sandstorms, which directly impact the yield of local farmers.
United Kingdom
Flood
The challenge
People living in flood-prone areas of the United Kingdom increasingly struggled to afford an insurance cover.
EMEA
Other
The challenge
A key objective for Export Credit Agencies (ECAs) is to ensure that the energy projects they support comply with the requirements of, for example, the Paris Agreement. Although the mandate is clear, gathering and assessing the data from the ground-up is difficult and time-consuming. Moreover, there is also a need to have knowledge about country-specific climate commitments and scenarios.
Egypt
Health
The challenge
Public social health insurance in Egypt does not fully cover people working in the informal sector, which is mostly composed of low-income women. This restriction in coverage results in nearly 89% of Egyptians paying for their own health expenses.
United Arab Emirates
Other
The challenge
Employees in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) faced uncertainties in the event of involuntary loss of employment, leaving many of them vulnerable and forcing foreign workers to leave the country prematurely.
Nepal
Earthquake
The challenge
Nepal had the opportunity to create a 216-megawatt run-of-river hydropower project by harnessing the power of the Trishuli River. In order to get sufficient financial support for the project, lenders required earthquake insurance.
Vietnam
Agriculture
The challenge
An estimated 10 million farmers in Vietnam, many of them smallholders, rely on agricultural outputs for their livelihoods. At the same time, Vietnam’s extensive coastline makes it particularly susceptible to tropical cyclones and coastal flooding, threatening food security, farmers’ livelihoods and one of the country’s main agricultural exports: Rice. The ability to monitor the health of its rice crops is critical to Vietnam’s economy.
China
Rainfall & Tropical Cyclone
The challenge
The Pearl River Delta, located in the province of Guangdong, is one of the fastest growing urban regions globally and is frequently struck by tropical cyclones and excessive rainfall.
China
Agriculture
The challenge
China experiences frequent natural disasters, often causing death and widespread property damage. In the event that recovery measures are delayed, it can spell long-term disaster for the economy of a region.
