It’s important to understand that documentary filmmakers can experience vicarious (secondary) trauma, similar to first responders. It can happen after spending time in the field or after watching or rewatching hours of film with subjects experiencing traumatic issues. This month our filmmakers with the PBS Ignite Mentorship program chatted with Malikkah Rollins, co-founder of DocuMentality about vicarious trauma and other mental health matters. In my journey through the ever-evolving field of mental health, I often come across profound insights that stop me in my tracks. Most recently, while listening to a podcast, I encountered a thought-provoking quote: “All forms of Activism is often grounded in projection. Projection is a symptom of unprocessed developmental trauma.” This statement raises intriguing questions about the psychological dynamics at play in activism, particularly its extreme forms. Could it be that some activists are unknowingly projecting their unprocessed traumas onto the issues they passionately advocate for? If this is true, it has far-reaching implications for both activists and the causes they represent. It invites us to consider whether our own activism, or our responses to it, may be influenced by unresolved traumas. This understanding might not only contribute to personal healing but also enhance the effectiveness of activism by fostering a deeper understanding of the driving forces behind it. It is Mental Health Awareness Week and all this week Red Rock will be aiming to improve the awareness of Mental Health and to help end the stigma around mental health. We will be posting every day and highlighting an area around Mental Health which can be present in all walks of life but also at Red Rock. Monday - Launch day including kick-off meeting in the office along with a MHAW theme and education literature. Tuesday - Focusing on anxiety including information on how to look for the warning signs and what we can do as a business by creating a learning library in the office. Wednesday - Break the Stigma and mental health, personal stories including Sarah Chapman highlighting and discussing her own experiences over the past 12 months, and it's bring your dog to work day! Thursday - Wear it Green Day and group activities such as quizzes and team breakfast to raise awareness. Friday - Review of the week and what we can do better as a business. Looking ahead to the next campaign with a focus on embedding awareness around mental health in the culture and final thoughts. #mentalhealth #education #mentalhealthawareness #culture #help

📖🌟 Lessons from "12 Angry Men: Stories of Black Men in America" 🌟📖 When I read the book "12 Angry Men: True Stories of Being a Black Man in America" almost 10 years ago it made me think about a famous line from a Kanye West song that I won't quote here. The stories in the book definitely inspired me. One day while sitting in front of my computer screen I thought to create the #BIPOCBookProject on mental health. The project would explore how the lessons from this book and to better understand the BIPOC experience and underscore the importance of sharing mental health narratives. 📚🌍 The book sheds light on the multifaceted experiences of Black men in America, providing poignant insights into their challenges, triumphs, and resilience. As I read these stories, I couldn't help but draw parallels between the lived experiences shared and the crucial need for open conversations about mental health within the BIPOC community. 🧠🤝 The #BIPOCBookProject aims to provide a platform for BIPOC individuals to share their own mental health narratives, breaking down stigma and fostering understanding.
