It’s important to understand that documentary filmmakers can experience vicarious (secondary) trauma, similar to first responders. It can happen after spending time in the field or after watching or rewatching hours of film with subjects experiencing traumatic issues. This month our filmmakers with the PBS Ignite Mentorship program chatted with Malikkah Rollins, co-founder of DocuMentality about vicarious trauma and other mental health matters. The organization creates dialogue and collaborative change to the key mental health and well-being challenges currently facing the documentary community. #PBS, #Documentality, #PBSIgniteMentorship, https://documentality.org/ @malikkahrollins

Secondary & Vicarious Trauma (SVT) is different than burnout or compassion fatigue. Professionals working with children, adults, and communities experiencing vulnerabilities or marginalization, living in fragile or disaster-impacted areas, or navigating through a crisis may experience SVT but misidentify it as burnout or compassion fatigue. As part of the Safe Organizations Learning Academy's (SOLA) series on trauma-informed practice, we explore Secondary & Vicarious Trauma (SVT) in the Introduction to Trauma-Informed Practice with the aim of raising awareness and ensuring that *helpers* identify when support & connection is most needed. #traumainformed #SOLA #safeorganizations #elearning #hybridlearning #safeguarding #childsafeguarding #workplaceculture #continuouslearning #support #connection
Did you know that Secondary & Vicarious Trauma (SVT) is different than burnout or compassion fatigue? According to the American Counseling Association (2016), SVT is “the emotional residue of exposure to traumatic stories and experiences of others through work; witnessing fear, pain, and terror that others have experienced; a pre-occupation with horrific stories told to the professional.” Professionals working with children, adults, and communities experiencing vulnerabilities or marginalization, living in fragile or disaster-impacted areas, or navigating through a crisis may experience SVT but identify it as burnout or compassion fatigue. If you are or think you may be experiencing SVT, please speak with a mental health or psychosocial professional to access the right support, connection, and care. As part of our series on trauma-informed practice, we will explore SVT and how you might grow in awareness in order to continue engaging in the work you love. #traumainformed #SOLA #safeorganizations #elearning #hybridlearning #safeguarding #childsafeguarding #workplaceculture #continuouslearning Come learn with us!
