New guide for taking tech forward in systems. NHS Confederation have worked in partnership with Google Health to produce a short guide for members on how best to take forward the advances in technology in healthcare and best use the systems they already have in place to further the NHS’s technology agenda. This follows on from the joint report we published last year: https://bit.ly/3Ntees8 The guide explores five key components for unlocking the future of patient-facing technology in healthcare and includes a number of useful examples. This guide is aimed at ICS digital leads and strategy and transformation leads across the health and care system.

Last week, I talked about the World Economic Forum's report on the current state of healthcare technology, where I focused on the importance of adoption and scalability as opposed to innovation. The report also highlighted a key distinction between front-end and back-end technologies, a differentiation I believe carries significant weight in the success of healthcare delivery. Front-end technologies, which are patient-facing solutions, are often the focus of attention. However, back-end technologies that streamline and optimise operational healthcare aspects are equally, if not more, essential. For front-end technologies to function optimally, robust infrastructure and solid foundations are required, which are provided by back-end technologies. Imagine the AI potential in healthcare; without a strong back-end support system, its effectiveness is compromised. Essentially, the success of front-end solutions is largely dependent on the quality of the back-end technology. A common misconception is that implementing an expensive electronic health record system will solve all your back-end issues. We need to consider a new paradigm, where the emphasis is a shift towards using technology to support clinical pathways and operational processes rather than just storing patient records. As shown in Figure 7 of the report, innovative clinical pathway management solutions can significantly improve workflows, leading to a range of benefits. These include reducing administrative tasks, facilitating decision-making, optimising resource allocation, providing real-time information, and minimising the risk of errors and complications. This new paradigm is aimed at enhancing both the efficiency and efficacy of our healthcare delivery. So by prioritising back-end technology, we lay the groundwork for a more efficient healthcare system. This, in turn, paves the way for front-end solutions to excel, improving patient experiences and outcomes. Hona (YC W24) integrates with electronic health record systems to collect and condense medical histories, enabling providers to fully understand their patients by finding data previously lost in mountains of charts. New regulations have improved communication between electronic health record systems, but healthcare providers struggle to handle the resulting surge of unstructured data. This challenge is compounded as patient records grow in size — the average patient record is equivalent to half the size of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'! Providers, seeing over 20 patients daily, must obtain comprehensive histories from various sources, often navigating through extensive PDFs for crucial details. This overwhelming task contributes to cognitive overload, risking burnout, revenue loss, and compromised patient care. Founded by Adam Steinle, Danielle J. Yoesep, and Shuying (Sofia) Zhang, a team of ex-biomedical engineers, Hona is transforming the complexity of healthcare data into something radically simple. It searches nationwide for patient data based on providers' schedules, condensing notes, lab results, and more into specialty-specific clinical summaries with links to original sources. Hona then converts its clinical summaries into value-based care metrics, risk scores, and quality measures for practice-level insights.
