New guide for taking tech forward in systems. NHS Confederation have worked in partnership with Google Health to produce a short guide for members on how best to take forward the advances in technology in healthcare and best use the systems they already have in place to further the NHS’s technology agenda. This follows on from the joint report we published last year: https://bit.ly/3Ntees8 The guide explores five key components for unlocking the future of patient-facing technology in healthcare and includes a number of useful examples. This guide is aimed at ICS digital leads and strategy and transformation leads across the health and care system.

Last week, I talked about the World Economic Forum's report on the current state of healthcare technology, where I focused on the importance of adoption and scalability as opposed to innovation. The report also highlighted a key distinction between front-end and back-end technologies, a differentiation I believe carries significant weight in the success of healthcare delivery. Front-end technologies, which are patient-facing solutions, are often the focus of attention. However, back-end technologies that streamline and optimise operational healthcare aspects are equally, if not more, essential. For front-end technologies to function optimally, robust infrastructure and solid foundations are required, which are provided by back-end technologies. Imagine the AI potential in healthcare; without a strong back-end support system, its effectiveness is compromised. Essentially, the success of front-end solutions is largely dependent on the quality of the back-end technology. A common misconception is that implementing an expensive electronic health record system will solve all your back-end issues. We need to consider a new paradigm, where the emphasis is a shift towards using technology to support clinical pathways and operational processes rather than just storing patient records. As shown in Figure 7 of the report, innovative clinical pathway management solutions can significantly improve workflows, leading to a range of benefits. These include reducing administrative tasks, facilitating decision-making, optimising resource allocation, providing real-time information, and minimising the risk of errors and complications. This new paradigm is aimed at enhancing both the efficiency and efficacy of our healthcare delivery. So by prioritising back-end technology, we lay the groundwork for a more efficient healthcare system. This, in turn, paves the way for front-end solutions to excel, improving patient experiences and outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gaNMAVcW Great read by The Mandarin journalist Julian Bajkowski about the Productivity Commission’s new research findings that $5B+ a year could be saved by better integrating digital technology into everyday practice, not to mention easing pressures on Aus's heaving healthcare system. Bajkowski touches on the “adroit” defence of data silos by the medical profession. It is true that software vendors (primary and hospital focussed) all have their own way of doing things which frustrates the health information exchange and interoprability. I’ve first hand experience of this interacting with many of the healthcare applications in Australia and New Zealand over the last decade - our awesome Mantel Group digital health team have seen the good, bad, and ugly. Alleviating this “clunky interoperability” as the Financial Review’s government editor Tom Burton calls it doesn’t need to turn into a turf war, or dissolve into a case of picking winners. You don't want to back one horse in the acceleration of digital health. What you want is common standards. That’s what enables health information exchange. It also allows innovation and interoperability, both of which are vital to the sector’s sustainability. The Productivity Commission report refers to “sharpening incentives for software providers to make [health information exchange] more seamless” to encourage interoperability. Countries like Singapore and the United States are doing this effectively - some approaches use a regulatory stick, others are private enterprise lead. Both head in the same direction - a direction Australia will have to follow to transition to value-based models being adopted abroad, which reimburse providers for quality interventions as opposed to activity-based measures. An important consideration for the NSW Government's Special Commission of Inquiry into Healthcare Funding for its work is to have longevity. Interoperability plays a pivotal role, serving as the bridge that connects disparate systems and enables them to communicate effectively. Do you agree? 💡 Interoperability in healthcare refers to the ability of different healthcare IT systems and applications to exchange, interpret, and use data seamlessly, regardless of the vendor, platform, or technology used. At its core, interoperability facilitates the flow of information between systems, enabling healthcare providers to access a comprehensive view of patient data, make informed decisions, and coordinate care across multiple settings and disciplines. 3 main Benefits of interoperability: - Enhanced patient care Interoperability enables healthcare providers to access a complete and up-to-date view of patient information, including medical history, test results, medications, and treatment plans, regardless of where the data originates - Improved operational efficiency By streamlining data exchange and eliminating manual processes, interoperability improves workflow efficiency and reduces administrative burden for healthcare providers. This allows clinicians to spend more time delivering patient care and less time navigating disparate systems and duplicative tasks, resulting in cost savings and increased productivity - Facilitated research and innovation Interoperability enables researchers and public health agencies to access and analyze large-scale datasets from diverse sources, facilitating population health management, epidemiological studies, and clinical research At the same time, there are some challenges - Main Challenges of Interoperability: Despite its potential benefits, achieving interoperability in healthcare remains a complex and multifaceted challenge. Technical barriers, such as incompatible data formats, standards, and protocols, as well as legal and regulatory issues, such as data privacy and security concerns, pose significant hurdles to seamless data exchange. Additionally, cultural and organizational factors, such as resistance to change and lack of collaboration, can impede progress towards interoperability. Interoperability serves as the foundation for a connected and collaborative healthcare ecosystem, enabling seamless integration of systems, data, and workflows Are you looking for a tech team to boost your healthcare product?
