Overview
Our Johannesburg office was launched in 2012 and has since grown to more than 120 lawyers and business services staff. By combining our substantial global resources and market-leading local presence in South Africa, we provide a truly international, on-the-ground service offering to our clients operating across the African market.
Working alongside Africa-focused lawyers from across the global Firm, as well as with our Africa Relationship Firms in every jurisdiction in which we do business, our locally qualified South African team advises governments, domestic and multinational companies, project sponsors, banks and other financial institutions on a wide range of legal issues.

Our team's local and international expertise spans corporate and commercial sectors, from banking & finance to natural resources.
Our Antitrust & Competition team advises on high-profile, complex multi-jurisdictional antitrust matters and competition law issues in the aviation, hospitality, gaming, food and beverage, media, consumer retail, technology, property, construction and fast-moving consumer goods sectors.
Our Banking & Finance team structures and executes landmark domestic and cross-border deals, including the first collateralised debt obligations in South Africa. We advise both public and private organisations, including financial institutions acting as arrangers, agents, lenders or investors in Africa-based loans.
Leveraging our understanding of local legal, financial and business issues, our Mergers & Acquisitions and Private Equity practices help leading domestic and multinational companies execute some of the most complex deals in the country. From investment to exit, our transaction strategy is cost efficient and client-focused. The team recently advised South African mining company Tharisa on its ZAR 1 billion Johannesburg Stock Exchange listing, an offer directed at selected institutions from in South Africa, the UK and China.
Resolving complex issues
Using in-depth regulatory knowledge and cultural insight, our Dispute Resolution team represents clients in litigation and arbitration matters in the energy, mining, infrastructure, construction, and banking sectors and guide distressed corporations through business restructuring and insolvency.
Regularly instructed for South African, African and international mandates, our Employment lawyers provide guidance on employment matters involving transfers of undertakings, corporate restructuring, collective bargaining, unfair discrimination, retrenchments, and executive dismissal.
Our Project Finance team advises project sponsors, developers, contractors and lenders on projects in rounds 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the REIPPPP. The team's experience includes groundbreaking projects in the renewable energy sector in African, including the first IPP wind-powered electricity generation project in Namibia and the first biomass project and coal baseload power project in South Africa.
