Well. That’s a wrap on our Annual Conference #ASAC24 a huge shout out to our brilliant conferences and events team who did the most fabulous job today (you will sleep well!) Here are some of my personal highlights (with a caveat that the whole day was a highlight, and I certainly learnt some expert Q&A tips from Mark MacDonald and Jennifer Keen!): 1. I was really impressed by Prof Chris Whitty, whilst living longer is an extraordinary improvement, the increase in dementia prevalence is driven by an ageing population. 2. Ben Richardson from CF expertly shared new evidence on the economic impact of dementia which we commissioned. Only 1.4% of health care spending goes on diagnosis and treatment. Dementia costs £42billion in the UK, and people living with dementia are funding 63% of these costs. We can’t ignore this evidence, it strengthens our case for dementia - that it needs to be a priority. 3. Inequalities was a cross cutting theme, and so it should be. I was hugely proud of Emily Adams Bronte Heath Malayka Rahman-Amin for an expertly planned session showcasing the power of drawing together research, influencing and services. We talked about deepening our understanding of inequalities, increasing access to diagnosis and post diagnostic support and increasing our own ability at AS to tackle inequalities. 4. We also heard from Walnut Unlimited about a recent survey we commissioned to understand what people living with dementia, carers and those closest to them think. Only 16% of people think the government considers dementia a priority. On the theme of diagnosis, 60% found the diagnosis process stressful. People said it took too long, and one of the biggest barriers to getting a diagnosis was the time spent waiting to see a healthcare professional. 5. The day was rounded up by a brilliant session led by Fiona Carragher why is dementia diagnosis important? And what does it look like in the future? We heard from Dr Vanessa Raymont and Prof Jonathan Schott. Two expert research teams who will conduct UK-wide clinical trials to identify blood tests to boost dementia diagnosis. A huge source of hope for the future. Simply, for me, today was a huge example of the one thing I am extremely passionate about - using evidence for good. This is about using different types of evidence to deliver impact now and in the future for people affected by dementia. We cannot continue to ignore the evidence - whether that’s on the scale and impact of dementia and/or the solutions that can create better outcomes for people affected by dementia from diagnosis to end of life. We need to act now. Here’s to next year! #ASAC2024
