The so-called ‘Tylenol Murders’ have never been solved, but Johnson & Johnson responded to the situation so well that, almost 45 years later, its work is still cited as an example of excellent crisis leadership. In the first episode of Polpeo’s podcast, ‘What Just Happened?’, Kate Hartley and Tamara Littleton explored how the crisis unfolded, the intrigue of the investigation, the bravery of recalling an entire product line, and what happened as a result of the crisis. They were joined by crisis expert Jonathan Hemus of Insignia - Crisis Management Training, Planning and Consultancy, who talks about why having a clear strategic intent and strong leadership was so important for the brand's survival. In our latest blog post, we look at some of the leadership lessons businesses can learn from the Tylenol crisis. #CrisisManagement #Leadership https://lnkd.in/eSXBbH8k
About us
Polpeo simulates how a crisis breaks and spreads over digital and social media. Its simulation platform replicates the behaviour of media including social networks, microblogs, news sites, forums, blogs and video channels, while a live team behind the scenes mimics how the public might respond to the crisis. You can also send and receive simulated emails, collaborate on drafting strategies and communications plans and Q&As. Polpeo lets you experience the live drama and time pressures of a crisis, and rehearse and test your responses in a closed, safe environment. It is the closest thing possible to managing a real situation unfolding on social media. Simulations can be run for groups between 5 and 100 people. Polpeo is a joint venture company between social media agency The Social Element, and PR specialist Kate Hartley.

Nearly a year after it was first conceived, the Polpeo crisis podcast “What Just Happened?” is live! Join Polpeo co-founders Kate Hartley and Tamara Littleton as each episode, they delve into a different brand crisis, exploring what happened, how the brand responded, and whether it could happen again. They’ll be joined by some of the top experts in their field to help them assess the lasting impact on the business, the brand, or even the industry, and how it changed behaviour. Listen and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts, and if you enjoy it, please do rate it, too!

We’ve had a blast touring the UK to run crisis simulations with the PRCA for members and non-members. Our last stop was Belfast and what a location to hold a simulation in - the old Crumlin Road Gaol. If you missed us this time, check out the PRCA’s training courses - we run simulations for both the leadership academy and a crisis masterclass.
What a great end to our UK tour with Polpeo for the PRCA. We’re in Belfast running a crisis simulation for a really lovely and engaged group in the most incredible location - the old (now decommissioned) Crumlin Road Jail. We’ve been to Glasgow, Leeds, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, London and Belfast. We’ve met some wonderful people and taken time to explore the cities. Everyone has been so welcoming and receptive and Tamara Littleton and I have felt like a girl band on tour. Massive thanks to the incredible team at the PRCA for organising everything so brilliantly.

Is your organisation prepared for a crisis? It’s surprising how many aren’t! Some of the things you could be exploring around crisis prep are: 🔔Having a clear, written, crisis strategy. 🔔Conducting scenario planning – including running workshops and simulations. 🔔Building your crisis team and identifying your decision-makers ahead of potential crises. Proper planning is essential if you want to give your organisation the best chance of restoring its reputation fast. #CrisisStrategy #CrisisCommunications https://lnkd.in/ecxvywnH

Little preview into some work that’s going on behind the scenes on a new Polpeo podcast and this is the side of podcasting no one talks about. Guests appearing upside down causing Kate Hartley, Aby Hawker and I to crack up and having to lock my disruptive cats away as they have a tendency to walk across the desk. Keeping it real 😎
