This week the BBC Studios Kids & Family team are at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The event provides a unique space for the animation industry to come together with over 15,000 attendees from dozens of countries. Our team will be on the ground meeting customers and seeking out new talent showcasing their work. In the latest issue of Animation Magazine, BBC Studios Kids & Family MD, Cecilia Persson, outlines what we will be talking to clients and potential co-producers about at the festival. Highlights include an animated adventure comedy about a group of extraordinary friends that we have in development, which first came to life at Annecy last year! We’ll also be sharing more information and materials about Rafi The Wishing Wizard, plus STUDIO AKA’s Hey Duggee Squirrel Club spin off and - new to our catalogue – Obki, by Obki Productions and Ritzy Animation for Sky Kids. Our VP Sales, Katharina Pietzsch, has also spoken to C21Media ahead of the festival about how Bluey continues to expand its global footprint, as well as how we are bolstering our move into the FAST space with sales of Hey Duggee. Katharina also explores the issues facing the animation industry and how we are responding to it, and how we are making use of opportunities in the social media and digital space for kids’ content. Across BBC Studios we have been shocked and saddened to hear the tragic news about Dr Michael Mosley.    Condolences and full support have been offered to Michael’s wife Clare and his family. Our thoughts are with them at this time.   Michael was not only one of the most trusted and popular science personalities on radio and television but also a great friend and colleague to many in the BBC Studios Science Unit and across the wider company.    His work with the Science Unit, both in front of and behind the camera, spanned three decades. With shows like Horizon, Trust Me, I’m a Doctor, alongside his contributions to The One Show and Morning Live, he brought ground-breaking insights from the worlds of science and medicine to millions.   Michael was a brilliant programme maker and presenter. His kindness, sense of humour and inspirational mind will be missed by so many of us.

This week we marked the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. At a series of commemorative events in Portsmouth and Normandy tribute was paid to the extraordinary bravery of those involved in the Normandy landings. Staged by BBC Studios Events Productions these special broadcasts featured moving testimony from those who were there, alongside musical and spoken word performances from well-known faces. Thank you to everyone across BBC Studios, and our freelance colleagues, who worked together to commemorate this remarkable chapter in our history.

🐾 Meet Mr Waffles!    He’s a fully qualified therapy dog who dropped by BBC Studios for some special scratches this Mental Health Awareness Week.    Therapy dogs like Mr Waffles are scientifically proven to reduce stress and improve mental and physical health. Alongside his human helpers he raised awareness of mental health resources available across the company.    We offer a wide range of well-being support for employees all year round. This includes access to one-to-one counselling via the The Film and TV Charity, personal and professional coaching to help with life’s ups and downs, and GP24 – our 24-Hour GP service.    Earlier this year BBC Studios was named the best place to work in the UK television industry in the Glassdoor Best Places to Work 2024 rankings. Determined solely on employee reviews it’s confirmation of the work we’ve done to create a culture where everyone can do their best work. Just ask Mr Waffles! 🐾 #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #Wellbeing #MentalHealth

We’ve done it again! For the third consecutive year we've won the Memorable Moment prize at the BAFTA Television Awards, crowning a brilliant night for BBC Studios. Made by our Production Label Lookout Point Ltd, Happy Valley’s climatic showdown took home the only award voted for by the public. Following wins for Paddington Meets the Queen and Strictly Come Dancing’s silent dance, it’s wonderful recognition of the impact our programmes have on audiences. Across our Units, Labels and Invested Independent Producers, BBC Studios won nine awards, with Sarah Lancashire also taking the Leading Actress prize for Happy Valley alongside the Memorable Moment award. Our commitment to top class comedy was recognised with Gbemisola Ikumelo winning Female Performance in a Comedy for BBC Studios Comedy Productions’ Black Ops, whilst our invested indie Various Artists Limited won Scripted Comedy for Such Brave Girls, and Male Performance in a Comedy for Mawaan Rizwan’s performance in Juice. BBC Studios Entertainment Productions picked up two awards, with their epic staging and coverage of Eurovision 2023 earning a BAFTA to go alongside awards from both the Broadcast and RTS Awards. They also picked up the Entertainment prize for the ever fab-u-lous Strictly Come Dancing. Rav Wilding and the BBC Studios Documentary Unit team behind Scam Interceptors team won Daytime, having already won at the Broadcast and RTS Awards, whilst BBC Studios Drama Production’s Casualty took the Soap prize for the third time in four years. Alongside the five awards won at the BAFTA Craft Awards in April, it’s fantastic to see the amazing work done by our teams over the last year recognised. Congratulations!
