💡 Understanding Avian Influenza 🦆 🌎
Avian influenza (#HPAI), commonly known as bird flu, is a viral disease, which occurs primarily in birds.
The disease continues to be a significant concern for animal health and can lead to major production losses in infected farms. For decades, stringent surveillance and control measures against highly pathogenic avian influenza have been in place in the EU, to detect, contain and eradicate the virus when it arises in kept birds. There is also a robust EU framework of prevention and preparedness measures in place in case of infections in animals.
📈 In recent years, avian influenza has been increasingly detected in different species of mammals, which is a worrying trend. The real concern is that eventually a strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza might emerge that is infectious between humans.
For that reason, the Commission has intensified collaboration with all partners in this area. We monitor the situation extremely closely with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
EU health security legislation ensures surveillance, swift response and coordination, should a case be detected.
❗ To date, there has been no confirmed human-to-human transmission of highly pathogenic avian influenza, nor have there been any reported cases of avian flu in humans in the EU/EEA. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) currently assesses the risk for the general public as low.
🛡 Through the #OneHealth approach, we continue to work across policies and sectors, including public health, animal health and food safety, to better prevent and respond to any emerging threat.
🌎 On a global level, the EU is working with other countries and international organizations to rapidly exchange information on the disease situation.
