Tobacco is responsible for around 8 million deaths every year, including 1.2 million from second-hand smoke exposure. Not only does tobacco harm users and those around them, but it also harms our planet. And tobacco farming takes up valuable land that could be used to grow crops that feed millions of people. Global unemployment is expected to slightly decrease this year —standing at 4.9%, down from 5% in 2023. Yet, slow progress to reduce inequalities in labour markets is worrying, according to a new report by the International Labour Organization. The report underscores a persistent lack of employment opportunities globally, estimating that the number of people without a job but who want to work stands at 402 million. Women, particularly in low-income countries, are disproportionately affected. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eg666-YE

“Gender-sensitive peacekeeping is everybody’s business — not just us women.” Major Radhika Sen of India is the recipient of the 2023 UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award for her work supporting conflict-affected communities with the United Nations Peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. UN Secretary-General António Guterres described her service as “a true credit to the United Nations as a whole,” adding that she earned the trust of the communities she served “with humility, compassion and dedication”. Major Sen helped establish networks for local people to voice their security and humanitarian concerns. As a gender advocate, she encouraged women to address issues collectively, fight for their rights and amplify their voices within the community, in particular in security and peace discussions. https://lnkd.in/eBS6SCtX

Since 1948, more than two million people with United Nations Peacekeeping have helped countries navigate the difficult path from conflict to peace. UN peacekeeping missions are formed by military personnel, police officers and civilians, who work with and for the most vulnerable people around the world. They protect civilians, help create the conditions for lasting peace, assist with the delivery of humanitarian aid, promote human rights and much more. On Wednesday’s International Day of UN Peacekeepers, we pay tribute to these brave women & men, and thank them for their commitment to a more peaceful future. https://lnkd.in/d5z3aip
