Did you know the Australian Government gave 1500+ companies $16 BILLION in tech services contracts in FY22? Girl Geek Academy is calling for gender equality action plans for companies to secure govt tech contracts to leverage $16B in Federal Government buying power. This measure would also ensure those 1500+ companies would collectively help deliver the industry recommendations from Ed Husic MP's Diversity in STEM review. We got the government spreadsheets did the maths: $16 BILLION+ on contracts over $100,000 in FY22 went to suppliers of various cloud services, computer programmers, forensic IT Services, information technology consultants, software and hardware engineering, and system administrators. Those procurement "carrots" could be used to encourage the tech industry to deliver gender equality. If you want to receive public funds, you need to do the work to support women in the tech industry. The federal government must ensure tech companies present gender equality action plans before they get access to the government chequebook. We need to fix the system, not the girls ... the government has both the power and money to change it. Let's fix the funding, not the girls. 🎮 Lisy Kane April Staines Amanda Watts Tanja Kovac https://lnkd.in/g6TVkTGJ

Girl Geek Academy has submitted a major contribution to the “Diversity in STEM review: Let’s talk solutions” with a clear call for systemic change. “It’s not about ‘fixing’ the girls and women; it’s about fixing the system that works to exclude them and continues to push them out. Too much attention has been on analysing how or why women exclude themselves rather than looking at how #STEM education and industries block their progress," said Sarah Moran.

Enough is Enough. A clear example that the systemic changes are still needed before we can reach equity and respect in the world of game development. Kotaku AU had to quickly disable comments on this article due to the uninformed, toxic and harassing replies. Thank you to Emily Spindler-Carruthers for her coverage on the Girl Geek Academy submission to the Federal Governments Pathways to STEM review. #dei #diversityandinclusion #gamedevelopment https://lnkd.in/gGFREKJb
Women Are Being Pushed Out Of Tech Industry, And Girl Geek Academy Wants That To Change

❌Enough is Enough❌ Women have been pushed out of tech for far too long, and we can no longer deny the structural issues giving them a shove. Girls continue to be role-modelled that tech is no place for them. We surveyed over 300 Girl Geeks and their big message to the Australian Government is that they are sick of talking about it. They want action. They want investment to turn things around. We're calling on Ed Husic MP for action now. #dei #diversityandinclusion #tech #stemcareers #investment
Thanks to Gretchen Scott for speaking to me for this story about the career roadblocks and sexual harassment pushing women out of tech. I can confirm her voice is not at all annoying! Sarah Moran and Girl Geek Academy have pulled together a new report which makes for some pretty confronting reading about the experiences of women in STEM - in particular calling out conferences as dangerous events for women. https://lnkd.in/gTjaiqQV
