Co-Founder at Yup Yup Labs - Making peoples lives better by improving the cities they live in - empowering women and girls through technology, innovation and leadership.
This is incredibly important and if we are genuine about creating an economy where no one is disadvantaged due to their gender or postcode - or just a stronger economy -we all need to listen and act. Right now the South Australian Economic Statement lists a number of male-dominated STEM industries as our priorities (and no female dominated ones). Right now, I couldn’t in good faith say women could feel safe to go into those industries unless we put in place significant change and supports to make those industries safe. This report just scratches the surface of what we are hearing often - that we can get women into studying STEM, but WHS issues like sexual harassment are pushing them out of the actual industry. It’s ambitious to want to address gender equity and to have a STEM focussed economy, but unless that ambition is matched by strategy that specifically addresses the issues currently making those industries unsafe or inaccessible, it’s setting us up for failure. We’ve given up on applying for grants for our Dream in Code work, for exactly the reasons that Girl Geek Academy put in their submission. We simply don’t have the resources to be able to create the applications for funding we know isn’t enough to address the problems. We want to see these industries succeed and our collective economic potential realised. For that to happen we need to start addressing the underlying problems of these industries and taking the concerns of those leading the charge for women in STEM seriously. It’s 2023. #genderequality #womenintech #stemcareers #economicdevelopment #womeninleadership

Have you heard about the surge in South Korean high school dropout vlogs on YouTube? 📹 It's a captivating trend that's stirring both support and concern. While these vlogs offer a unique peek into the lives of these brave teenagers, the increasing dropout rates are raising eyebrows and pointing fingers at the limitations of the education system. The comments on these videos are flooded with support, but the data from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family tells a different story – over 88% of dropout students would have stayed in school with better opportunities to explore their talents and career paths. 🔍 It's time to critically examine the education system. Is it stifling the creativity and individuality of students? 🤔 Professor Park Joo-ho of Hanyang University’s Department of Education suggests a much-needed overhaul to foster critical thinking skills and accommodate the diverse talents of youth. 💬 What are your thoughts on the rise of high school dropout vlogs, and what changes do you think are necessary to the education system to support the individual growth and aspirations of students? #EducationRevolution #CriticalThinking #IndividualityMatters

This #EPGenderEqualityWeek asks the question 'Gender Equality: What's next?' One answer is foster the next generation of female leaders in the field of physical science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). A research by Dr. Anesa Hosein found that girls who play video games🎮 are 3 times more likely to pursue STEM careers than girls who don’t! In our interview with Dr. Hosein, she said💬 "I believe the use of video games within classrooms can open up to children a different way of constructing and exploring their learning which can be beneficial in investigating the world through a more holistic approach." Full interview 👉 https://lnkd.in/eiNJMCQD In this #EuropeanYearOfSkills, we encourage teachers, educators, and education policymakers to check-out our Games in Schools 📚 initiative (https://lnkd.in/eWrXi324), which includes a MOOC for teachers explaining the opportunities and challenges of integrating video games into teaching and learning, and a practical Handbook that guides them through incorporating video games into the curriculum (https://lnkd.in/emtWwvvA). #VideoGames #VideoGamesEU #GamesinSchools #GenderEquality
