Renter's guide to Portland, OR

Portland is praised for its independent-artisans, bike culture, progressive ideals, outdoorsy obsessions, sustainability and organic everything (from food to beer to Christmas trees). Portland has been dubbed Stump City, Beervana and Soccer City USA, along with a slew of other nicknames, and has a too-cool nature that is fun to satirize - as done in the hit show about Portland, Portlandia.

North Portland
North Portland is pure, distilled Portlandia. This Portland neighborhood was once a blighted area where barred doors and shuttered windows looked like a scene from Straight Outta Compton. Now this gentrified Portland neighborhood looks more like a scene straight out of Portlandia. The recently revitalized area is a hotbed for local artists, eclectic eaters, chic-shoppers and DIYers. Upscale condos and luxury apartments are planted among historic homes and former-brothels. You can find live music at the historic (and haunted) McMenamins White Eagle Saloon, or at the Wonder Ballroom, a former church turned into an incredible live music venue.
Northwest Portland
It’s nearly impossible to throw a Nabokov novel 15 feet without hitting a published author in this book-loving part of Portland. The Portland staple, Powell’s City of Books, is a great place to build your reading repertoire, as well as find inspiration listening to lectures by world-renowned authors. You can find live music, breweries, tea parlors, ice cream shops, theater, art studios, museums, doughnuts and dance clubs from the Pearl District all the way south to downtown Portland. And, the entire western border is a bonafide Garden of Eden - from the Portland Japanese Garden to the 70-mile stretch of hiking trails through the temperate rain forest that is Forest Park. If you’re new to Portland, be sure to check out the local gatherings at Skidmore Bluffs, where the sunset crowd gets together to hang out and play music on a grassy hillside above industrial yards on the Willamette River.
Southwest Portland
Is it possible for there to be a quiet side of downtown? If you live in Portland, then yes. Just south of Burnside St., rolling hills filled with single family homes, museums, parks and local government buildings live peacefully just a stone's throw away from downtown Portland nightlife. Resplendent views of the city’s natural beauty add to the tranquil vibes of this Portland quadrant. Visit the Rose Test Garden for a sweet-scented stroll and scenery of nearby Mt. Hood and Mount St. Helens. Lewis & Clark College and Portland State University are located closer to the city center, where you can find apartments near the downtown Portland revelry.
Southeast Portland
Welcome to the bohemian ghetto. In southeast Portland, rent is low for both residential and commercial spots. That means you can score an affordable pad surrounded by quite a variegated group of up-and-coming local Portland businesses.
Northeast Portland
For some reason, the people of Portland tend to migrate to the Northeast as they grow up and settle down. Perhaps it’s the Old Portland feel, with aging craftsman houses, historic homes, tree-lined streets and flourishing neighborhood gardens. That’s not to say that Northeast Portland isn’t hip. In fact, any hipster would feel right at home strolling through the Alberta Arts District, where locals can find eateries, roasters, brew houses, boutique shops and - you guessed it - plenty of art. Northeast Portland is also where the Convention Center is located, where organizations worldwide come to set up events ranging from dog shows to beer festivals to Comic-Con. Tip: AFoLs (Adult Fans of Legos) can find the popular Portland lego celebration, Bricks Cascade, each spring at the Oregon Convention Center.
East Portland
East Portland is the real, down-to-earth part of Portland. This is where organic farming, wildlife-centered parks, and community fairs, such as the Ramona Street Fair, create the tight-knit, friendly vibes that Portland locals love. The city-owned Zenger Farm is located in this part of Portland, dedicated to protecting the wetlands and building sustainable organic farms to feed the masses of Portland foodies. More people live in this far eastern enclave than any other district, and the residents are more diverse than anywhere else in Portland. Finding the best apartments in Portland will be a grand adventure. Bring your bicycle and ride across town to see it the way the locals do - on bike, crossing bridges, flanking the river and exploring all the Portland nooks and crannies. Enjoy.
