I can’t explain it but a lot of “Ghibli-inspired” stuff is bad in the same way a lot of Solarpunk is bad

It's the pastoral fantasy of it all, but it's not JUST the pastoral fantasy. It's the absolute resistance to plot that could shatter a completely static tableau of aesthetic

Someone in the replies put it in a really good way. It's an empty shell of an aesthetic vs. engaging hard discussions behind it. It's kind of like that trend where everything was ____punk simply because it had a grungy or alternative look. Punk became an empty word, nothing more than an aesthetic instead of the actual meaning and stance behind what punk actually is.

It's all fun and games until you're expected to stand up for the beliefs behind the look/aesthetic that takes the punk name. There has been a shift to dropping punk and replacing it with core, which has been nice.

I think a lot about how that one Solarpunk cartoon that was going around and touted as the dream ended up being a fucking yogurt commercial. It basically just comes down to that in both cases. When done poorly*, it strips out all context and meaning from the original concept and leaves nothing but marketing copy: frictionless "cozy" vibes and a fleeting sense of nostalgia for the sole purpose of moving Product.

*Well. It's not that poor a job if we're looking at sales, is it.

I've been thinking a lot about solarpunk and material production lately, and how much the smelting and mining of metals and ores would mar the aesthetic but how necessary it would be for all the advanced technology the aesthetic requires and it's been really eye opening to me the way it's an approach that's really city-based and just assumes manufacturing happens somewhere off-screen.

My current fascination with the genre is "okay who built the solar panels and how were the wind turbines built and where did the concrete come from and who mined the lithium for your batteries"

was expecting someone to at least say it but surprised to find no mention,

but i think it's important to mention that the actual Studio Ghibli itself is not bound to these same issues as the "Ghibli-inspired" because real Ghibli is not frictionless, "cozy", or driven by product in the same way

many have phrased it better than me. here's one tweet

Reading the article I see why TERFs are mad about it; it explicitly makes the distinction between gender as a social entity and sex as a biological category, and defines biological sex having multiple factors, both of which are anathema to TERF philosophy.

It also includes these fascinating paragraphs about the role of estrogen in different types of physical activity, directly debunking the widespread notion that estrogen is the weak human's hormone and only does weak human things:

Given the fitness world's persistent touting of the hormone testosterone for athletic success, you'd be forgiven for not knowing that estrogen, which females typically produce more of than males, plays an incredibly important role in athletic performance… The estrogen receptor—the protein that estrogen binds to in order to do its work—is deeply ancient. Joseph Thornton of the University of Chicago and his colleagues have estimated that it is around 1.2 billion to 600 million years old—roughly twice as old as the testosterone receptor. In addition to helping regulate the reproductive system, estrogen influences fine-motor control and memory, enhances the growth and development of neurons, and helps to prevent hardening of the arteries. Important for the purposes of this discussion, estrogen also improves fat metabolism. During exercise, estrogen seems to encourage the body to use stored fat for energy before stored carbohydrates. Fat contains more calories per gram than carbohydrates do, so it burns more slowly, which can delay fatigue during endurance activity. Not only does estrogen encourage fat burning, but it also promotes greater fat storage within muscles… which makes that fat's energy more readily available. Adiponectin, another hormone that is typically present in higher amounts in females than in males, further enhances fat metabolism while sparing carbohydrates for future use, and it protects muscle from breakdown. Anne Friedlander of Stanford University and her colleagues found that females use as much as 70 percent more fat for energy during exercise than males. Estrogen's ability to increase fat metabolism and regulate the body's response to the hormone insulin can help prevent muscle breakdown during intense exercise. Furthermore, estrogen appears to have a stabilizing effect on cell membranes that might otherwise rupture from acute stress brought on by heat and exercise. Ruptured cells release enzymes called creatine kinases, which can damage tissues… Linda Lamont of the University of Rhode Island and her colleagues, as well as Michael Riddell of York University in Canada and his colleagues, found that females experienced less muscle breakdown than males after the same bouts of exercise. Tellingly, in a separate study, Mazen J. Hamadeh of York University and his colleagues found that males supplemented with estrogen suffered less muscle breakdown during cycling than those who didn't receive estrogen supplements.

The article also talks about sexual dimorphism in different species, concluding that "Modern humans have low sexual dimorphism compared with the other great apes," and that overemphasis on averages obscures the wide dispersal of individual traits, which is what I keep saying.

Please read the article if you have the time, it is SO cool. Human biology is so cool. Earth is so cool.

the queer community was formed by people who were deemed strange and abnormal in society based on them not conforming to expectations about sexuality & gender. there are no specific boundaries bc this isn't a club. a cishet guy that likes wearing dresses who fights side by side with us for true liberation, is 100x more queer than a millionaire gay man who's besties with companies that sell us watered down versions of our own culture for profit during pride while donating to homophobic lawmakers every other month.

i'm gonna say this again because it really pissed some people off: yes, I would rather have a cishet GNC man who stands with queer people, is involved in our spaces and our culture, stands up for us when we are attacked, and is active in furthering queer liberation, than a rich gay man who spits on the lower-class queers who gave him the ability to be out, who sells his soul to corporations who couldn't give less of a shit about us, just for the wealth and power of capitalism. Fuck that guy. I'm not saying he isn't gay - he is! Nothing can take that away! But we have the saying "not gay as in happy but queer as in fuck you" for a reason. The family-friendly gay millionaire isn't my brother. The poor crossdresser who has been a part of this community since it's inception is. Fuck your bootlicking bullshit.
