Pino’s big front facing eyes, clear pupils, large legs and three big forward clawed feet implies that he may be a predatory bird, sharing these features with the eagle. However, the big, stumpy, cone-like pointed beak implies a generalist, or more likely largely a grain, seed or even insect based diet
A close american relative of the same genus which informally goes by the name “Big Bird” shares many of the same features, including impressive scale, bright coloration and similar predatorial bird features. However its beak is more directly akin to that of an insectivore, possibly even partaking in woodpecking behavior (though this has never been observed).
The Portuguese Poupas in the same genus shares a lot in common with both birds, though it looks a bit more like the American Big Bird than the Dutch Pino. Perhaps more closely related? However its orange-brown coloration suggests camouflage. Perhaps there are animals even a bird of this scale must be afraid of, if only in this region?
The Mexican Abelardo has a uniquely vibrant coloration. Its parrot-like beak implies a parrot-like diet of nuts, fruits, seeds and only the occasional insect. Seeing as it’s known to share a small amount of its habitat with its northern cousin, perhaps this is to prevent competition with Big Birds much more insect-based diet? Either way, the birds are known to be friendly towards each other.
You’ll find another relative of Pino in Turkey, known as Minik Kuş. Its vibrant red-orange and pink coloration is a treat to look at, and again shares a lot in common with the American Big Bird. Likely a seed and insect eater.
Though he may not look it, the American Little Bird is surprisingly also in the same genus! (though previously thought to merely be a juvenile) Its relatively enormous beak makes it an expert at cracking open nuts and tough seeds, or tearing through the hard skins of many fruits. Its also the only bird in the genus capable of flight!
Another distinct, and unfortunately extinct fellow of the Big Bird genus is the Brazillian Garibaldo. Its eerie outward demeanor, as well as its flattened beak is reminiscent of the shoebill stork. It likely ate fish, worms and small insects, alongside algae and many other plants and seeds you’d find near water. Though its lack of webbed feet implies it may not have been a swimmer, preferring to stay by the banks of the river. And though he may look scary, he’s known to be very friendly.
While children around the world enjoy the summer holidays within the safety and comfort of their homes and plan fun beach trips with their families, our kids' childhood has been reduced to securing the bare minimum of food and water, fending off swarms of disease-carrying insects, and enduring the stifling heat inside the hellish tent. Seeing them fill water containers and struggle to carry them with their tiny hands breaks my heart into a million pieces. Our babies fall asleep drenched in sweat and keep waking up crying and gasping for breath. What makes it even more unbearable are the plagues of flies and mosquitoes that keep torturing their little fragile, malnourished bodies, increasing the risk of contracting infectious diseases, with no medical care available. They also face a very real and imminent threat of dehydration due to water and formula scarcity.Their older siblings are encumbered by burdens way beyond their years. They think it is their responsibility to fill heavy water containers and protect the newborns, but the truth is they are as vulnerable to the same threats that keep growing every day. No child should live in such a hostile environment. Rubble, garbage, and the smell of death are all around.
Our kids used to have a beautiful spacious home built after years of toil and sacrifice, just to be turned into ruins in the blink of an eye. Now, they are given no other choice but to be confined to the tight airless space of a makeshift tent swarming with all sorts of insects. Even if they go outside the only things that await them are the scorching sun, the hot summer air, and foul smells all day long. The summer nights are often equally suffocating depriving them of desperately needed sleep.
Using a wood-fired self-made stove to cook is beyond torture in such heat. It is also very dangerous to the children who keep going close to it. My heart sinks each time I see pictures of them next to the fire. Even preparing a baby bottle,if ever available, is an ordeal in such conditions but my family have no other options. They have been enduring unfathomable, relentless suffering for nine months straight, and they have been more than resilient but they are now way beyond exhausted. They have been daily fighting for their very survival but there's no guarantee of safety anywhere in Gaza as not only what is left of the buildings but also the tents are being indiscriminately bombed every single day. Even going to the beach to escape the sweltering heat has become a perilous journey for my family, and countless others, since civilians keep being targeted with airstrikes there too.
My family were not allowed to have even the slightest respite since the beginning of this waking nightmare. They have been striving to survive bombing, malnutrition, disease, the cold winter, and now the deadly heatwaves.
When I left Gaza shortly before the war, my dream was to build a brighter future for my loved ones. I have never imagined, once in my life, that I would be raising funds to literally save their lives. Now, my only wish is to keep them alive and as safe as possible, given the circumstances.

It's a rough world out there for people who were teenagers during the exact slice of gaming history where indie video games had become feasible to develop and distribute globally, but the definition of "indie" didn't yet encompass corporate studios and million-dollar budgets. They'll tell you their favourite game when they were a kid was, like, a point-and-click visual novel whose protagonist dreams they're a vast formless sea monster that learns about the concept of colours after finding a discarded helium balloon, or a hypertext fiction/precision platformer hybrid exploring gender as a mechanism of social control, and you think they're either being pretentious or deliberately fucking with you, but no, that's just what the indie gaming scene was like for a couple of years there. The sea monster thing got a front-page feature on the same site that made Bloons Tower Defense a household name – it was literally played by millions of people.
I'm sorry but I will never ever use goon as slang for a guy who jacks off a lot or whatever it apparently means now. A goon is a guy in a clown mask and purple tank top who sees a caped crusader swooping down to beat up him and his buddies and yells "IT'S DA FREAKIN' BAT!" and I will accept nothing else.
