sometimes i wonder how useful it is to discuss Judaism as an ethnoreligion when goyim clearly have no idea what that means

An ethnoreligion isn't a religion in the way people normally think about them. It's more like a set of cultural practices that have a spiritual element. Like Méxicans with Día de Muertos or Chinese ancestral worship. "Judaism the religion" doesn't really exist. It's simply the name for the collection of things Jews do that relate to ideas about metaphysicality, but Jews don't really make that distinction. Originally we had no word for "Judaism" or even "religion". There are just certain things we do because we're Jews (like wearing tzitzit or not eating pork), and when asked the justification we give is "because G-d told us so". That's why you have Jews who don't believe in G-d but keep kosher; they don't do it because it's religious, they do it because it's Jewish.

I think explaining it as a tribe is much more helpful for this exact reason. People get confused, particularly if they know that Judaism accepts converts. That makes it seem like it is primarily a religion that you join out of spiritual conviction rather than a compelling aspect of who you are supposed to be and being adopted into a family by mutual consent. I'm a Jew because once I discovered Jewishness and actually learned about what it actually is and means, I realized that I don't know how to be anything else. In that way, it is very much like coming to understand myself as non-binary; once I understood, I knew that's what I was at a bone-deep level. It doesn't matter what anyone else says about it, they can say whatever they like. They're just wrong. I know who I am and Hashem knows who I am. Becoming Jewish is a process that requires the consent of the community (unlike gender identity), but I knew I had a Jewish soul and had to pursue conversion. And once I finished, I have never looked back or regretted my decision. I'm home.

Anyway this is why I tend to avoid using "convert" or even "Jew by Choice" unless I have to clarify, instead preferring "gerim." I was a foreigner who naturalized into the Jewish tribe, not just someone who had an epiphany where the scales fell from my eyes. It's true that a spiritual journey accompanied this decision, but it was equally important to me that I love the Jewish people and felt myself to be deeply a part of it as I was in love with Jewish religious life and seeking the presence of Hashem.

ttpd makes me so mad bc we KNOW she's actually capable of good lyricism and thematic motifs etc if she actually tries rather than pumping out 34 versions of 31 near-identical songs within less two months. i need her to run off to the woods for at least a decade and smash all her electronics and come back with music that's actually good

despite her rich parents she at least had to work somewhat for her fame . like there was actually something impressive about her older music. now shes skyrocketed to a level of fame that her recent work doesnt deserve but she can get away with being the shein of music because she's so famous people will defend anything she does. drives me insane

had the idea to go thru ttpd and combine the songs into categories and decide which shouldve been scavenged for stray good lyrics and ideas and made into one actually good song rather than like 7 mid ones. unfortunately this means i'll have to listen to all the songs on her most boring album again probably. -_-. but this album is IMPRESSIVELY mediocre and underbaked. theres potential here but she didnt give it time to marinate and it sucks. and i hate matty healy.
