Review of Dynadot

Dynadot continues to shine

Dynadot continues to shine as an exemplary registrar and domain marketplace I joined them this past year due to their reputation and great prices for domain-transfers.
They have a simple, intuitive C-panel for one's domain portfolio, and great customer support 24/7. And, as an added bonus for domain investors on a large web forum for them, Dynadot has a great representative that goes the extra mile.
What really has excited me recently is a feature that allows one to spot unauthorized domain listings on a large marketplace challenged with this problem. Thanks to Dynadot, I can quickly see if someone is trying to sell my domain elsewhere without my permission on at least that one major competitor's marketplace. Dynadot has truly been a blessing for that vexing problem.

Dan.com is still really upsetting

Dan.com continues to be really upsetting with their recurrent fraudulent listings
Since my last recent TrustPilot review, almost 3 dozen new unauthorized listings of my domains appeared.

It's as if rogue sellers on their platform believe that they can post anyone's domain names for sale on Dan.com, without the owner's permission and with impunity. They apparently don't mind potentially scamming unknowing buyers of hundreds or even thousands of dollars. As before, their listing prices for my domains were much higher than my legitimate, actual marketplace listings elsewhere.

Dan.com customer support did remove the fraudsters' listings more quickly this time. But there was no indication that any action was taken to restrict or ban the fraudulent sellers involved, especially one that had posted almost two dozen of my names. That is all the more saddening.

Dan is really upsetting me

Dan is really upsetting. They have a serious problem with domain sellers listing other folks' domain names for sale without their permission. Shortly after having about sixty fraudulent listings of my domains removed from Dan.com, now thirty more rogue ones showed up.
As with previous recent incident, I contacted them with my Whois privacy off and using the email on record with ICANN. Now, the additional demand is that I make changes to all of my registrar records to prove that I am the actual owner first. So, instead of simply suspending the listing and asking the alleged scammer to verify their ownership, I as a non-customer an being asked to do thse additional time-consuming steps?
Note that, during all this time, the fraudulent listings still remain. They are being propagated to over 100 partner sites. And potentially some unwitting buyer will be very frustrated when the sale doesn't go through.
These recurrent rogue listings are happening way too many times with Dan.com. At least have the decency to provide a block to prevent any future listings unless ownership is proven upfront.

Dan.com deeply saddens me

Dan.com deeply saddens me. I do not use them at all for buying or selling domains. Sellers on their platform keep listing my domains for sale without my authorization. Sometimes these rogue sellers are demanding 5 to 10x more than what I as the actual owner have listed on my registrar marketplace.
I use my registrar marketplace, Dynadot, for my actual, verified sale listings. Unfortunately, Dynadot is unable to stop these rogue sellers on Dan. And I keep asking Dan.com to remove the unauthorized listings, but the same problem keeps returning.

Fake Listings Are A Problem With DAN Marketplace

Please note that it is with great sadness that I finally decided to report my experience here. My concern is that others may be hurt by some very disturbing, ongoing problems with Dan, and I hope this review helps prevent that.

Beware of using them, due to their ongoing problem with fake listings. Dan does not mandate verification of actual ownership for domains, so these problems continue.

I first learned about this after delisting several domains from the portfolio I was selling there. Fake listings then appeared, with sellers pretending to own and trying to sell my domains. This happened multiple times. Getting the fake listings removed was not that simple. Ultimately, I completely stopped using DAN.

Then, I learned about the domains on their marketplace that sellers never even bothered to register. Nonetheless, they are trying to sell them for a hundred or even thousands of dollars. In other words, for most of those domains, you could go to a registrar, and buy the domain potentially for less than $10. Instead, on Dan, sellers that don't even own the domain name are trying to charge extreme amounts.

On one search of their marketplace today, 60% OF THE DOMAINS BEING SOLD WERE NOT EVEN REGISTERED.

So, before making a purchase on DAN, it may be very prudent to check lookup.icann.org or another independent whois site, to make certain that a domain is actually registered. You may be able to get it for much, much less from the registry using a registrar with no significant markup.

So Buyer Beware. You may think you are dealing with the owner of a domain, but instead it may be an imposter. And if you list your domains there, don't be surprised if others will try to list and sell them when you move them to a different marketplace.

Dear,

It is correct that Dan maintains a low-barrier platform. We do not require users to go through long verification processes before domain names can be listed with the ultimate aim of selling them. We do have several personal verification processes that we put in place to determine the validity of listings. If a seller lists a domain for sale that does not belong to them, we will ensure the removal of them shortly after listing the domain. As often it could involve a mistake or in other cases, outdated listings, we have to perform more elaborate verifications prior to closing ones account.

The majority of invalid listings result from outdated listings. In this instance, a seller overlooked part of their portfolio expiring and forgot to remove them once this happened. To bypass problems with this for sellers, we have introduced the ownership verification record, which can be added to ensure the rightful owner can list it. Regardless we fully agree that the sellers have the responsibility to ensure that their portfolio is up to date to prevent these domain names from getting sold.

We appreciate the feedback to help us improve the platform, but stating that one search resulted in 60% of the domain names being false is giving a wrong impression. Looking at our total sales volume per month, the number of cancelations due to outdated listings is insignificant as opposed to the total number of successful sales.

Ongoing issues with fake listings

I have listed domains previously on Afternic, and had some successful sales. There were, however, some security concerns with listing domains there, so I removed all my listings. Now, I am finding that some of those domains are now being listed by other(s) on their marketplace--without my consent.

It is important to realize that Afternic does not have domain verification at this point. And, in fact, some domains listed are actually not even registered by the owner. For example, someone was attempting to charge $4000 for domains on Afternic that they didn't even own. So, before buying a domain there, one may want to check lookup.icann.org, to make certain that the domain was ever even registered. That could mean the difference of paying perhaps $10 or $20, compared to thousands of dollars.

I will update this review if and when the problems appear to be remedied.

I recently had a $250 sale for a domain using the Afternic Fast Transfer. The transaction was smooth, with payment within about 5 days.
This is my second experience with successful sales using Afternic, and my first with the fast transfer service. Both went very well, and customer service was superb answering questions promptly.
