Maintaining a vibrant and inclusive online community is important, but safeguarding the safety and well-being of users, particularly vulnerable individuals like minors, is equally crucial. As part of the Trust & Safety team, I regularly come across NSFW videos, and it is always disheartening to realize that a single video can leave lasting trauma on those who view it. Yesterday, I encountered an alarming video on a prominent social media platform that depicted the tragic death of a minor, who was stabbed numerous times by their friend. What shocked me even more was the presence of onlookers who failed to intervene and stop the assailant. The video lingered in my mind, and despite reporting it to the platform, my request for its removal was quickly dismissed. This incident led me to question the effectiveness of content policies and community guidelines, especially when the video was not appropriately categorized as NSFW or age-restricted, and considering the potential long-term impact such content could have on younger users. The dissemination of disturbing videos, particularly those involving violence against minors, highlights the need for stricter content moderation policies and their consistent enforcement. By adopting a comprehensive approach, we can significantly reduce the chances of such content impacting our community. #ContentModeration #TrustandSafety #Policies #OnlineCommunity #DigitalWellbeing

Using the information we gathered, The Markup then manually tested Instagram’s automated moderation responses on 82 new accounts and 14 existing accounts."

SCOTUS preserves Section 230 This decision on Section 230 ("Supreme Court rules for Google, Twitter on terror-related content") is a very important one--note that it's unanimous. I had written about this a few months ago, that this case was in consideration before the Court and a different outcome would have eroded the publisher-distributor liability safeguards of Section 230. This should make networks and online platforms more hands off in their approach to preserve their immunity and let the responsibility lie with the originator. Please see my previous post on this topic for a more extended discussion. https://lnkd.in/gcY_DpSp)
