If you’re new to the space “digital equity,” you may not know that 20 years ago the net was being battled over. The Net Neutrality battle was an open battle where literally teenage girls saw themselves as the champions of ensuring that the net was not a tiered class system where the rich could afford to have services. Time is moving fast, and technology and connectivity have evolved and why it’s important (even if some are irritated by the process) to assess and ensure that the internet is open and safe for all. “How Open Internet Rules and Title II Classification Help Consumers • Openness – Restore basic rules to prevent broadband providers from blocking legal content, throttling speeds, and creating paid-for fast lanes. • Free Speech – Open internet policies protect Americans’ freedom and their speech, only regulating broadband companies’ ability to limit consumer and business activities. • Service Standards – Consumers expect fair treatment by the businesses with which they engage, and Title II allows the FCC to ensure those standards are met. • Privacy – Title II would restore broadband consumer privacy and data security protections that apply to all telecommunications services under the Communications Act. • Robocalls & Robotexts – Broadband network oversight could help fight scam calls and texts that often originate from online platforms and traverse VoIP networks. • Nationwide Standard – Establish a uniform national standard for internet openness rather than a patchwork of state-by-state approaches, benefiting consumers and Internet Service Providers.”

Open internet protections have long had widespread – upwards of 80% – support from the American people who have come to expect that they will be able to access all lawful content on the internet uninhibited by their broadband service provider’s business decisions. A very important decision out of the FCC. All U.S. broadband providers - and those providing services support broadband - must be aware of the FCC's new Digital Discrimination rules, as these rules are going to change the compliance landscape for both existing broadband services and the deployment of new ones. This one is going to hurt! Yes, those responsible for the robocall campaign will feel the most pain. Election interference is a BFD! But the Telecom Company that allowed the calls to pass through its network is also going to face the music, and it won't be pretty. Trust me, you do NOT want to be Lingo Telecom right now, and you certainly don't want to be the next carrier whose name is dragged through the mud, just because you didn't do enough to: A) Know Your Customer and B) monitor, manage, and act quickly to stop bad traffic on your network BEFORE the government tells you to Cease & Desist! Authorities have taken action against two Texas companies, Life Corporation and Lingo Telecom, believed to be connected to robocalls that used AI to mimic President Joe Biden's voice and discourage voting in New Hampshire's primary.
