Disinformation currently poses one of the most significant challenges to liberal democracies by undermining the foundational principles of informed citizenry and open discourse. Digital technologies have been revolutionary in expanding access to information and opportunities for expressions. In an era of rapid information dissemination, false or misleading content can spread quickly, eroding trust in institutions, sowing division among citizens and distorting the democratic process. Here is a case from 2018 in Europe. These kinds of maps have used/still use. First of all it looks like Europe is under attack. Red color tells danger. Some arrows are bigger than countries (look Spain!). It looks like migrants are heading directly to Europe (which we know that they have had very dangerous and long ways to go) and very often migrants are told to use illegal border crossings which make them seen criminals. It really matters which kind of maps or pictures you use. This just came to my mind when Finland closes its boarder lines in eastern boarder.

Oxford Centre for Technology and Development (OCTD) Ltd / University of Oxford, Centre on Migration, Policy and Society & Climate tech impact initiative
New technologies in migration and border management is not only migrants' issue. Surveillance technologies developed in this area can spread to other fields and affect an entire society. Suppose the lie detectors piloted on borders are successful and they meet no significant opposition from society, then we should not be surprised to see lie detectors in workplaces or in police stations in the near future. This, in turn, would mean new mechanisms of oppression in society at large. When it comes to social issues, advanced statistics can be manipulated in favour of the powerful, with probable options being presented as inevitable or actual. This encourages an approach that perceives such situations as neutral and objective, magnifying the algorithm and obscuring the structural factors.

We are delight to have Dr Aphrodite Papachristodoulou present at our lunchtime seminar and explore the Impact of Border Technology on Human Rights. The session dived into the use of cutting-edge tech in the EU's border management and how it’s reshaping control over seaborne migrants, challenging traditional notions of borders. The seminar also shed light on emerging human rights issues, like abandonment at sea and migrant pushbacks, fuelled by border tech such as surveillance drones. Efficiency at the San Diego-Tijuana Border 🇺🇸🇲🇽 San Diego-Tijuana, with 5 million residents and $230 billion in economic power, is a thriving binational hub. Yet, border wait times, costing $6 billion annually, hinder its potential. The Smart Border Coalition seeks a "smart" border, balancing security and commerce. Innovation, like technology and streamlined processes, can unlock efficiency. Examples like SENTRI and modern ports show promise. Collaboration, expansion of trusted traveler programs, and pre-clearance initiatives are key. This border can set an example for others. 🌐✨ #BorderEfficiency #Trade Read more in the following link: https://lnkd.in/eYAYbsaR

Paperless borders: The Phl eTravel system Let’s recall how the COVID-19 pandemic led to the imposition of travel restrictions in almost all countries in the world. In the Philippines, this also led to changes to the airport screening process, which is commonly the first line of defense to reduce disease transmission. On this year, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) discontinued the requirement of paper-based arrival and departure cards and replace it with the eTravel system. The eTravel system is a digital platform, free of charge, for all arriving and departing passengers to enable the establishment of integrated border control, health surveillance and economic data analysis..... https://bit.ly/44da3XA #Philippines #Travel #Immigration #Southeast Jolin Bianca C. ‼️ The Government of Lithuania recommends that Lithuanian citizens not travel to Belarus and that those currently there leave the country immediately. Lithuanian citizens' travel to Belarus in defiance of the Government's recommendations puts their safety, health and lives at risk. ⚪ With the recent intensification of hostile and provocative actions by the Belarusian authorities against Lithuanian citizens who are already in the country or who have temporarily entered the country, citizens are urged not to travel to the country. 🔴 Lithuanian citizens travelling to Belarus are being questioned at border crossings, blackmailed and pressured to cooperate. ⚪ During border interrogations, smart devices such as phones and computers are taken from travellers, and their contacts, correspondence and other information is checked, which can later be used not only against them but also against their family members, relatives and acquaintances. Exciting news! We have a new #synergy with METICOS EU project! 💡 The EU-funded #METICOS project aims to create an up-to-date acceptance classification scheme as well as a societal and ethical impact dashboard of border control technologies, to empower three major sub-divisions of the wider border control sector: travelers, border control authorities and service providers. ℹ METICOS will focus on established models and theories, such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Innovation Diffusion Theory. In addition, performance and credibility expectations of smart border technologies from travelers, border management and law enforcement agencies will be explored in detail. As such, METICOS aims to create a holistic solution to address challenges for border management, both as regards societal acceptance and efficiency. 🔍 Find more about METICOS project here: Facebook: https://lnkd.in/diJt53xz Twitter: https://lnkd.in/dgNScHWg LinkedIn: https://lnkd.in/dsrQ54gX E-Newsletter: Subscribe here: https://lnkd.in/d7M_SEAV
