Disinformation currently poses one of the most significant challenges to liberal democracies by undermining the foundational principles of informed citizenry and open discourse. Digital technologies have been revolutionary in expanding access to information and opportunities for expressions. In an era of rapid information dissemination, false or misleading content can spread quickly, eroding trust in institutions, sowing division among citizens and distorting the democratic process. Here is a case from 2018 in Europe. These kinds of maps have used/still use. First of all it looks like Europe is under attack. Red color tells danger. Some arrows are bigger than countries (look Spain!). It looks like migrants are heading directly to Europe (which we know that they have had very dangerous and long ways to go) and very often migrants are told to use illegal border crossings which make them seen criminals. It really matters which kind of maps or pictures you use. This just came to my mind when Finland closes its boarder lines in eastern boarder.

A fresh 'demo' of #hybrid #operations was recently set up at the Finland-Russia border as #russia started deliberately guiding illegal asylum seekers to the southeast border of Finland this week. Finland's #government has responded by announcing to close four border crossing points on Friday. Let's hope this demo will collapse into a 'demo effect' at the end of the day. The border situation in Europe and in the US/Mexico urgently requires more legal routes to migrate as well as secure borders. Achieving a political consesus is crucial. Have a look at the discussion at #DeutscheWelle https://lnkd.in/eZnCgZUj

A v thoughtful conversation about migration. Well worth a watch for those thinking about the challenges countries face in receiving immigrants in the EU and elsewhere. Constructively engaging with some of the things we commonly hear such as: « Oh yes, it’s terrible for them but we don’t have the resource or capacity.» Are the numbers of people arriving the problem or is there something else? Are migrants being politicised to divert attention from how states allocate, cooperate and manage resources for our infrastructure and support?
Some weeks ago, I was asked by Deutsche Welle to join a debate at the European Parliament, with politicians asking questions instead of leading. The theme: is Europe hosting too many migrants? And how should we proceed next? Here is a sum-up of that day. https://lnkd.in/d7a_Dx_s

“What we see with externalisation policies is that funds are provided to non-EU countries in return for border security. Often these funds come without strict overseeing mechanisms to monitor human rights violations. In addition, these policies empower the leaders of these countries, some of which have oppressive authoritarian leaders.” says the Migration Policy Group's Head of Research Dr. Basak Yavcan in an interview with Euronews. Externalisation policies and deals like the recent Tunisia – EU deal are ineffective and harmful. Instead, we should address the root causes that force people to migrate, such as global inequalities, political instability and increasingly also the climate crisis. To prevent needless loss of life, like the #pylosshipwreck last month, we need routes that allow people to migrate to Europe safely.
