Most recently, Binance general counsel Norman Reed was promoted to lead the exchange’s US arm on an interim basis after its US president and CEO, Brian Shroder, resigned. Soon after, a blockbuster $4.3bn penalty from the US Department of Justice forced Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao to step down and plead guilty to a money-laundering charge. The most prominent example of the hiring trend is John J. Ray III, the US lawyer appointed to pick up the pieces at collapsed crypto exchange FTX. “Lawyers have a well-regarded skillset,” says Jackson Baker of London-based headhunter Rutherford. "They can interpret what regulations are coming down the track, how that will affect the business and how to be commercial around them.
