The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency monitors environmental quality, offers technical and financial assistance and enforces environmental regulations. The MPCA finds and cleans up spills or leaks that can affect our health and environment. Staff develop statewide policy, and support environmental education. The agency works with many partners — citizens, communities, businesses, all levels of government, environmental groups and educators — to prevent pollution and conserve resources. Before a group of several hundred students at the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering, MPCA Commissioner Katrina Kessler said studying at the U was the perfect blend of opportunity and challenge. Kessler, who received her MS in environmental engineering (2001) at the U urged graduates to think about “what truly inspires and motivates you.” Perhaps “we share a love for biology, chemistry, physics, or making a difference in people’s lives through our problem-solving,” she told the graduates of the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering.
