We’re feeling a bit nostalgic this month. Twenty years ago, we opened the METRO Blue Line, known then as the Hiawatha Line, introducing light rail to Minnesota. A decade ago this month, we restored rail service between Minneapolis and St. Paul with the opening of the METRO Green Line. These projects were huge undertakings, involving years of planning and construction. But as those who were there for the openings recall, the efforts were well worth it. “The kids were always glued to the glass right behind you,” said Mark Ammend, who was among our first 15 train operators. “You almost felt like a rock star when you operated the train.” Two decades and 279.7 million rides later we’re working hard to preserve these historic investments and looking forward to expanding access to high-quality rail transportation through the Green Line Extension and Blue Line Extension projects. We invite you next Tuesday, June 18, to join us at Target Field Station for a celebration of these light rail milestones, and to learn more about what the future holds. Festivities will begin at 4:30 p.m. and continue through game time at 6:40 p.m. A program featuring speakers from Metropolitan Council of the Twin Cities, Hennepin County, Ramsey County, the Minnesota Twins and the mpls downtown council will begin at 5:30 p.m. Hope to see you there and thank you for riding with us all these years!
