🚀 Proud moment at Enerstock conference 2024! 🌍 Our team, represented by Janina Hippler-Nettlau, presented Malta Inc's Pumped Heat Energy Storage (#PHES) technology, highlighting its potential to revolutionize clean energy storage. The presentation focused on a use case model integration of a 100 MW, 36-hour PHES system into Hamburg’s district heating network, showcasing how it can store otherwise curtailed wind energy, provide reliable electricity and heat, and significantly reduce CO2 emissions by over 101,000 tonnes annually. 👏 Congratulations to Janina, Finn Runkel, and the entire team for their outstanding work and dedication to a greener future! #Enerstock2024 #EnergyStorage #Sustainability #Innovation #RenewableEnergy #GreenTechnology #CleanEnergy #districtheating

Malta is the future of energy storage
About us
Malta has developed a thermal energy storage system that can collect and store energy from any source (i.e. wind, solar, etc.), in any location, and for long durations, and dispatch it as electricity, on demand, for 8 hours to 8+ days.

Vice President, Europe at Breakthrough Energy. Previously, Director-General at European Commission. Views are my own, often rooted in 20+ years of experience in public policy.
‼️ Needed: EU and Global Targets for Long-Duration Energy Storage Much of our #energytransition rests on #renewables but what happens when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine? It’s an obvious question but one that wasn’t asked often before #warinukraine. When I addressed Long Duration Energy Storage Council (LDES Council) last week, I recalled that when colleagues and I tried to get an awareness campaign off the ground in 2021, we failed to convince others. But as soon as the war started, it materialized. And it received another boost after the US #ira (fun fact: the US energy storage pipeline is up 300% since IRA). Against this backdrop, I spoke about 3 themes: #climate #security #competitiveness. If we get LDES right, we will hit not only two but three birds with one stone. And for Europe, as a resource-poor geography that’s doubled down on renewables, is threatened by de-industrialization and has a war on its doorstep, these are no idle matters and therefore deserve top political attention. ➡️ Diversity and Duration are Key Fully agreed with Julia Souder who emphasized the need for diverse and longer-duration energy storage technologies. This is essential for integrating renewables reliably into electricity grids. But for that diversity to thrive, we need policymakers and investors to familiarize themselves with the #techfrontier. How else can they build enabling environments and fund the cutting-edge? Without dropping names, we’ve seen public tenders which specify yesterday’s technology, simply because procurement officers weren’t abreast of latest developments. 🇪🇺 That is why we urgently need a coordinated, future-oriented #eu strategy with clear targets and earmarked funding. I would go even further and mandate that with every quantum leap in renewables, we need a matching quantum leap in LDES (+buildout of the grid). Only when we think in systems – renewables, storage, grid and clean backup power like nuclear – can individual strategies amount to more than the sum of their parts. At Breakthrough Energy, we think in systems and are committed to develop the next generation of technologies that will help us get the most out of (mature) renewables. Our #ldes portfolio companies - Malta Inc Rondo Energy ESS, Inc. RedoxBlox Antora Energy - are at the forefront of #innovation. And one of the first EU Catalyst Partnership deals is Energy Dome in Sardinia. Together with another Catalyst project – US-based Form Energy – these are big, transformational steps towards large-scale deployment of LDES. 🌍 Looking ahead, we also need a global energy storage target. The #g7 announced the goal of 1,500 GW by 2030. This deserves follow-up at #cop29, with a global storage target commensurate with the COP28 announcement to triple renewables by 2030. Ambitious landmark deals like these will go a long way to attract investors, accelerate deployment and reduce costs, all necessary to pave the way for widespread LDES adoption.

Today, June 5th, #Enerstock2024 kicked off with a presentation from Annelies Vandersickel (German Aerospace Center (DLR) on "Carnot Battery Development - State of the Art & Prospects". The presentation highlighted Malta Inc's technology, showcasing the versatility of this type of energy storage and its improved profitability potential through heat integration and generation compared to power-to-heat-to-power-only applications. More on this topic will be presented on Friday, June 7th, by our Project Execution Director, Janina Hippler-Nettlau during the presentation "Malta's Pumped Heat Energy Storage Technology: A Clean Combined Heat and Power Plant". 👉 If you are attending Enerstock 2024, be sure to connect with Janina Hippler-Nettlau and don't miss her presentation on Friday June 7th at 11:05h in the Auditorium Pasteur to learn more about Malta's innovative technology. www.enerstock2024.org INSA Lyon - Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon

🎉Good news for the energy storage sector in Europe! The approval by the European Union of the reform of the internal electricity market and the creation of the General Sub-Directorate of Storage and Flexibility within MITERD marks a significant milestone to be celebrated. As expressed by The Spanish Energy Storage Association ASEALEN in their recent press release: The long-awaited reform of the internal electricity market by the European Union has met the high expectations for expediting the development of storage. Once the text is published in the Official Journal of the European Union, the Spanish government will have the opportunity to incorporate "non-fossil flexibility needs," that is, storage and demand response, in the update of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) to be submitted next June. In this regard, it is notable that these needs, expressed in hourly, daily, and seasonal time ranges, can be established as a "provisional national indicative target," without having to wait for the European Union to set the calculation methodology for these needs, thus accommodating the request that ASEALEN made during the public consultation process of this European regulation. 👉 Read the full press release: https://lnkd.in/dVH2uCPU #energystorage

On April 18th, Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) launched a call for 1,259MW grid access for synchronous electricity generation from renewable sources and #SynchronousStorage technologies like Malta Inc’s. The procurement exercise aims to quickly support the installation of synchronous electricity generation modules (#MGES) like Malta’s synchronous pumped heat #EnergyStorage technology (#PHES). These are power generation facilities that can maintain and balance the frequency of generated voltage and the frequency of voltage that is sent to the network. Batteries accompanied by synchronous compensators or that incorporate control functions that emulate the behavior of synchronous generators will not be considered in this call. With its rotating charging and discharging turbo machinery trains, Malta Inc's pumped heat electricity storage is considered by Spanish TSO Red Eléctrica de España as an eligible synchronous generator (MGES) that contributes synchronous short-circuit current to enable further connection of non-synchronous generators such as #solarPV and wind power plants.
