Leading up to the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC), EUETH hosted a high-level discussion on the future of Ukraine's energy sector and its critical role in the nation's path toward EU membership. ⚡ 🇺🇦 🇪🇺 The event, which featured keynotes by Maroš Šefčovič, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Ann Mettler from Breakthrough Energy, highlighted the need for close cooperation between Ukrainian, European and transatlantic partners. I'm often asked what I believe will be *THE solution* to decarbonize our economy. While I deeply wish for a one-size-fits-all solution, the reality is there is no silver bullet. However, in my view, the first step (alongside changes in consumption patterns) should always be electrification, using low-carbon electricity⚡⚡ This Tuesday, I was excited to speak at #BNEFSummit on promising electrification technologies for industry, alongside Joonas Rauramo, Bjørn Mauritzen, Hallvard Granheim, moderated by Allen Abraham from BloombergNEF 🔶 Steelmaking offers opportunities through indirect electrification using electrolysis-based hydrogen in Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) processes (e.g., GravitHy) and through direct electrification with methods like electroreduction (e.g., Boston Metal) and electrowinning (e.g., Electra). 🔷 Cement industry electrification is limited and focuses mostly on replacing fossil-fuel kilns with electric processes such as Coolbrook's. However, exciting recent news by Cambridge Electric Cement holds promise for greater electrification pathways in the sector. 🔶 For chemicals, electrification options include heat electrification and using electrolysis-produced hydrogen to replace current fossil-based hydrogen feedstock. 🔷 Cross-cutting solutions, such as Electrothermal Energy Storage, show high potential for electrifying industrial heat processes across various temperature ranges, initially targeting industries like food and beverage or textiles, with future advancements expected to reach up to 1500°C. Already commercially available thanks to Rondo Energy, Antora Energy, Magaldi Power SpA, Kyoto Group AS and many more. How can we scale electrification solutions for industry? Part of the answer is: ➡ First, massively increase our renewable and nuclear power capacity. ➡ But most importantly, focus on power grids: accelerate grid expansion (infrastructure but also capacity), grid connection and grid flexibility. Policymakers and grid operators play crucial roles in creating supportive conditions for industrial electrification, ensuring innovative technologies are included in strategic frameworks, support schemes, and market designs.
