Happy Juneteenth! On this day in 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were informed by Union soldiers that the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed, effectively ending slavery in the state. To commemorate the holiday, Google’s inclusion team — in partnership with the Black Googler Network (BGN) — is celebrating Juneteenth with the theme, “Living Legacies: an exploration of culture and community.” For many Black Googlers, BGN is a key source of culture and community in the office. When asked what this community means to him, Dalain W. — a data and insights lead based in Dallas — shared, “the support, fellowship, and sense of belonging BGN provides is unparalleled. It allows Googlers to develop an intimate sense of togetherness that fosters growth beyond the day to day work.” Zeru Feki, a senior account manager based in the Bay Area, shared a similar sentiment. “My involvement with BGN has transformed my experience at Google. Finding my tribe of individuals who share my background and passions gave me an incredible sense of belonging and empowers me to be my authentic self at work.” As we celebrate Juneteenth 2024, we’re focused on highlighting how each of us can play a role in driving change and building a more inclusive world. One of the first steps in this process is finding community, and we’re excited to spotlight just one of the many communities supporting Black Googlers and building a more inclusive workplace.

Meet Rachael: a PhD research intern on our People Analytics team! In her dissertation, Rachael examines workplace social networks. “I seek to understand how the relationships people have with each other at work can affect organizational efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion,” she explained. This summer, Rachael is studying the impact of Google’s racial equity commitments on our hiring and retention rates for groups that have been historically excluded from the tech industry. For Rachael, this presents an exciting opportunity to apply her research. “Being able to assess the impact of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives Google has implemented will allow me to help make Google more equitable for all.” When asked what she’s most looking forward to for the rest of the summer, Rachael cited community. “By the end of June, I'll have attended the Global Black+ Community Summit and SurveyCon, and I’m excited for other opportunities throughout the summer. It's also my first time living on the west coast, so I'm excited to explore San Francisco!”

Meet Koichi: a software engineering intern based in our Munich office! “This summer, I’m working on the Calendar Trust team,” he shared. “Easily explained, I work on a project to ensure Google Calendar data processing is compliant, safe, private, and secure.” Koichi’s passion for technology started young: “Growing up in France as a mixed Japanese-French kid, I relied on Google and YouTube to stay connected to Japanese internet culture.” Only two weeks into his internship, Koichi is particularly excited about connecting with Googlers. “Everyone I’ve met so far had very different backgrounds, making all of them very interesting to talk to. Moreover, all of them are so knowledgeable, they are passionate about software engineering, and are kind enough to talk a lot about their experience, which I love listening to.” To Koichi and our other 2024 #GoogleInterns — welcome to #lifeatGoogle!
