Thanks, The Robot Report and Mike Santora for this article! “Farmers know the optimal depth for weeder blades to effectively remove weeds while avoiding root damage, and we wanted to empower farmers by allowing them to adjust blade depth according to their preference for deeper, more effective weeding or shallower weeding to protect crop roots." - David Olivero, a Senior Mechanical Engineer on the FarmWise team, discusses the philosophy behind the individual blade depth control system on our Vulcan precision weeder. #AgTech #PrecisionFarming #CVML #Agriculture #Innovation https://lnkd.in/g_SXdFnu

Reliable Ag Computer Vision
About us
At FarmWise we believe that farming can be done at the plant level at scale leveraging the diversity of biological systems. Our team wants to enable farmers and ag equipment makers to reinvent farming operations with machines that can perceive, understand and act at the plant level in real-time. For years, FarmWise operated a commercial fleet of automated weeder prototypes across the greater Salinas Valley in California. After over 20,000 acres of commercial weeding and associated learnings, FarmWise released its Vulcan precision implement in 2023. Vulcan is a unique intra-row weeder and precision cultivator designed for durability and efficient weeding. Vulcan is powered by FarmWise's Intelligent Plant System (IPS), the most advanced computer vision architecture made for agricultural applications.

💡 Feature Update! Our Vulcan Precision Weeder supports many additional tools for soil engagement including squirrel cages 🐿 🌱 Squirrel cages are a great addition to our precision weeding toolkit, specifically in hard soils. By cracking these hard soils into smaller pieces at the surface, the cages break up tough clods of dirt and even out the bed top. Squirrel cages can be used on the front, like in this video, or the rear, depending on preferences and setup. You can see here a video of a customer-operated Vulcan precision weeder running squirrel cages on the toolbar at the front in decomposed granite soil conditions. 📽 video credits to Diego Alcantar. #precisionfarming #farming #agtech #agriculture

🍅 Day 1 of field testing Vulcan, FarmWise’s precision weeder, with processing #tomatoes in Huron, CA. We pushed performance to the max with speeds up to 2.5mph on these big tomato plants while still maintaining extremely high weeding quality through the accuracy of FarmWise’s IPS Vision System. Kudos to our testing team led by Neil Abranyi for a successful field validation work and demos with 10 different growers from the region. Processing tomatoes offer a complex plant structure that can make crop and center stem localization challenging. Our success is a testament to the power of our IPS vision system and our #MachineLearning pipeline: a rigorous data collection, image annotation, and model training effort. Shoutout to our ML team for the great strides in making Vulcan a success in a wide variety of crops including processing tomatoes 🌱 🚀 #PrecisionFarming #AI #CVML #FoundationModel #AgTech

Here is a powerful side-by-side comparison done by a Vulcan customer. On the left side, you can see a section of a red cabbage field left on purpose without any weed control. On the right side, this is what 100% weed control with Vulcan precision cultivator looks like: a thriving crop maximizing yield potential and offering great savings to the grower. #agtech #cvml #precisionfarming #farming #computervision

Thank you, Rhishi P., for highlighting FarmWise and our Vulcan weeding implement in the SFTW Startup Spotlight this month. Check out the article if you want a deep dive into how we're using #ai and #robotics to help growers tackle weeding as they continue to deal with a farm labor shortage. 🌿 #ai #agriculture #agtech #robotics
SFTW Startup Spotlight returns after a bit of a break. This month I highlight #artificialintelligence and #robotics company FarmWise Access to farm labor is a big challenge here in California (and in many other parts of the world). Labor can be up to 50% of your production costs in specialty crops Farmwise is tackling this challenge head on, with their AI powered mechanical weeding robotic implements (Vulcan!) and taking advantage of convergence of a few different technologies with a bold mission and vision "Enable growers and ag equipment OEMs to reimagine every farming task with machinery that can perceive, understand, and act at the plant level in real time" The startup spotlight from SFTW does a deep dive into -Farmwise's philosophy and a vision for a different way to farm -Deep dive into their technology (my favorite part!) -Their flexible and modular architecture -Use of foundation models (another topic I like to think about) -Business model, and most importanlty, -The team behind Farmwise led by industry veterans Tjarko Leifer and Greg Chiocco, and a diverse motivated team Link in the first comment #agriculture #california #agtech
