I had the pleasure of representing the University of Chicago as an Accessibility Advocate alongside Pat Kogos, Director of the Center for Digital Accessibility. Together, we participated in the inspiring hackathon organized by Code Your Dreams and Deaf Kids Code. It was truly motivating to hear from remarkable individuals like the first deaf Miss Austin, a skilled welder, and passionate accessibility advocate, Rebecca Giuntoli. The projects presented at the end of the day, crafted within a limited timeframe, were truly impressive. We're excited to announce KubeCrash Spring 2024, the free virtual conference for Kubernetes adopters that focuses 100% on open source! Last weekend, Fetch volunteers joined members of our Amplify and Adapt ERG at the Deaf Kids Code and Code Your Dreams Hackathon. The “Hack for Accessibility” event, hosted at Google’s Chicago office, brought together nearly 200 student attendees to develop projects to help people in the deaf community. Our volunteers had the opportunity to mentor participants, helping them fine-tune their solutions, before the students took the stage to pitch their innovations. Thank you to all of our volunteers for being an integral part of this transformative day that fostered innovation and supported greater accessibility in technology!

Thanks for a great opportunity to not just meet with great folks, but also contribute ideas/solutions to support deaf community. It was interesting to see how my own experiences with disability could benefit the deaf community as well. Also thank you Jessica Holberg for hosting this event. On Saturday, I had the privilege of meeting Rebecca at the Accessibility Hackathon, where I was volunteering and she was the keynote speaker. During her keynote, Rebecca shared with us some anecdotes of her journey navigating college as a person who is deaf. One that particularly stood out to me is that, since there’s not a lot of representation of people who are deaf in STEM, there are many technical words without signs for them, so she had to create them herself! She framed it as one of the gifts of being deaf, since American Sign Language is alive and 3D, which allows her to think in pictures, conveying the meaning of these technical words much better than any English word could ever do. Words fail to capture Rebecca's remarkable influence and spirit!
