Black Girls Code

I am happy to share this amazing news. I have been accepted to be a part of the Black Girls Code x ServiceNow NextGen Cohort starting in July. I am extremely grateful as someone who is transitioning into tech. This is only the beginning for me and I can’t wait to gain knowledge and meet some wonderful people in this field.

Ever heard the saying “Old fools were once young fools?” Such a powerful testament to the importance of deliberately pouring into younger people so they’re in a better position to take care of themselves and let’s be real—- us when we get older. That’s why I loved being an elementary school teacher and school leader— you get to see so much growth in real time. And it’s the same reason I’ve partnered with Black Girls Code for a second year to teach their young adults about managing their money mindset and their finances so they use their youth to their advantage. Earlier this year, we took a deep dive into money trauma, beginner investing, and retirement planning. To see so many young people ask thoughtful questions and share their financial goals is refreshing. And I was honored to be a part of their journey.

Years ago my math teacher inspired me to pursue a career in engineering. Today I pay it forward by mentoring young women pursuing STEM careers and volunteering with organizations like Black Girls Code. I’m also fortunate to work for Verizon, a corporate partner of BGC that promotes employee volunteerism with organizations focused on digital inclusion. The Raleigh-Durham chapter of BGC held its “Create A Chase” workshop today and I had the opportunity to see the next generation of female tech leaders in action💕

Black Girls Code offers programs that teach the fundamentals of coding, opening up career opportunities that may not have existed before. Now, they’re taking it a step further by expanding access to learning with the launch of Code Along Jr. It’s a free, 7-course program specifically for girls aged 7-10 to develop their interest in STEM. I love seeing women identify a need and create opportunities for the next generation. “Together, we can change the face of technology,” Black Girls Code CEO Cristina Jones shared. I couldn't agree more!

What a full circle moment! ✨ I remember attending my first Black Girls Code event in middle school. I was exposed to coding for the first time and I knew then and there I wanted a career in technology. Fast forward over a decade (wow!) and I have the privilege to co-chair a Microsoft employee network group called GLOW, who’s mission is to empower Black women at Microsoft Atlanta and support local nonprofits that benefit the needs of Black women and girls. So naturally, I just knew we needed to connect with Black Girls Code! I got connected with Brittany Long at Black Girls Code (BGC) and she shared my vision. She sprung into action and coordinated a lunch and learn for BGC students where me and several other GLOW Microsoft employees spoke on a panel about our careers and our unique professional journeys. From BGC sparking my tech interest -> to being featured on a BGC panel, hopefully igniting tech dreams in other young Black girls.
