Meta Delays Training AI on User Data in EU; Apple Set to be First to Face Charges Under DMA; X Pitches Live Basketball to Advertisers

On today’s news digest: Meta Delays Training AI on User Data in EU; Apple Set to be First to Face Charges Under DMA; X Pitches Live Basketball to Advertisers

In response to EU regulators’ concern over Meta’s decision to use data collected from users on Facebook and Instagram to train its AI, the tech giant has paused its plan. On behalf of the EU regulators, the Irish Data Protection Commission (the region’s lead regulator) requested Meta to delay the training of its large language models using users’ public content. Meta confirms that they will not be using people’s private messages for the training, nor content from accounts belonging to those under 18 years of age.

Also in the EU regulatory landscape, Apple is set to become the first in big tech to face charges under the Digital Markets Act. Brussels is set to charge the tech giant over stifling competition on its mobile app store, having determined that it failed to comply with obligations to allow app developers to direct users out of the Apple App Store without demanding fees. Apple may still take actions to address concerns over its practices, which could lead to a reassessment of the final decision.

In the social sphere, X continues pitching advertisers in hopes to increase ad spend invested in the platform. Having just commenced its seventh season on 15th June, the BIG3 basketball will air more than 25 live games on the platform in a virtual stadium where highlights can be discussed in real-time. According to X, advertisers can align their creatives with clips, highlights, and behind-the-scenes content from each game.
